Understood. Im speaking more from the standpoint (barring any new developments, that Max and Marcellus caller is a bit alarming) that we need to basically lock him up from another team getting him (non guaranteed rookie deal). If he's being a dweeb them forget it but the mistake would be if they didnt actually give him a real shot and some other team does and he get it.

Jody Smokz wrote:I agree with all of that but the fact that we can bring him in on an low guarantee or no guarantee deal and let him figure himself out in the D League is what Im saying to do. It's better than letting a team like the Spurs do the same and reap the benefits. He's on his last leg. It's fight or flight for him. If he washes out there was no real risk but if he pans out he was a free 1st rounder.

Nobody's arguing he isn't worth risking what we'd pay him if he were to get an offer from us. For next to nothing, he's a guy you take a chance on and see what happens, IF you have the roster spot for him.

But that's not the issue, the issue is people are saying we NEED to sign him or the FO will be making a huge mistake that we'll regret. They're saying, he's shown enough right now, to deserve a multi-year deal in spite of his off the court issues. That what he's shown on the court overshadows those issues to the point the FO would be idiots NOT to sign him.

Upshaw needs us more than we need him at this point. He's definitely not a must-sign kind of player.

He needs to be in the D-League to get playing time to improve his game. Not to mention he has to improve his off the court decision making. At a true 7'1 center with shot blocking and rebounding ability he could be a great future piece. I honestly thought they should have drafted him in the second round by buying a pick like they bought Clarkson's rights. Not signing him and stashing him in the D-League would be a big time mistake for the future.

IMHO he is Roy Hibbert 2.0.

It would be great to see Upshaw go against Hibbert everyday at practice. Learn verticality. Please sign him LA.

Damn shame if he actually got into trouble in Vegas. He couldn't even stay out of trouble until they actually signed him? That pretty much seals the deal.

http://www.forumblueandgold.com/2015/08/30/robert-upshaw-says-hes-going-to-lakers-camp-no-contract-agreement-yet

Of note is that Upshaw does strongly imply he will go to camp with the Lakers. Also of note is his confirmation there is no deal with the team as of yet though he does “know (he) will be a Laker” if he “does the right things; does what (he) needs to do.”

They need to invite him to camp, sign him to a contract (non-guaranteed) and stash him in the D-League. He has the potential and he needs the time to develop. He is never going be a huge scorer but Rebounding and Shot blocking are always huge.

yeah, honestly he will light up the d-league, and at least make the d-fenders somewhat decent also which is a bit of a bonus

Problem with this, unless we count him in our 15 man roster, any team can still pluck him up even if he is our affiliate player.

What is an affiliate player?

At the end of NBA training camps, NBA teams can allocate up to four players to their D-League affiliate team (if they have one). These players can still be called up by any other NBA team once they are in the D-League.

What is the fascination with Upsaw? I get his study defensive potential but his wrong doings is very concerning... If people really want him to have a future here then maybe the Lakers should send him to overseas and have him stash his game and check if his personality and attitude is Improving before giving him a roster spot... Chris Andersen and Larry Sanders are cheap potential available players for the back up C spot.

We don't want those two either especially Larry "I would rather smoke weed than play basketball" Sanders.

If not Sanders then Andrew Bynum is still out there and he is still better then any big man we have besides Hibbert.

MWP would be a good mentor for Upshaw if he seriously wants to carve out an NBA career.

Bynum is like the worst case scenario, he possibly could be less motivated than Sanders and we know he is more injury prone

Bynum is not a scenario (and neither is Sanders).

Some of the posters on our board need to get off the giggle juice.
