Asked why he thought Bynum picked last offseason to get serious about the game, Lakers coach Phil Jackson noted Bynum can this offseason get a maximum-value contract extension worth about $75 million over five years:

doesn't make sense - if the lakers give him the financial security 1 year in advance, he needs to give back - which means no max.
probably close to it
hopefully a lot of insentives as was mentioned
but maxing out a player 1 year before his contract is up (and he becomes a RESTRICTED free agent) ?
why ?

Phil has also stated that was out of shape (proved that wrong), outmuscled (true to an extent but impoving) and now money hungry. Of course he wants the big payday, any half motivated player does. Our hope is that he signs an Al Jefferson type deal for all the help we've given him.

This is no doubt all mind tricks. Bynum has shown he is a type of player that loves a challenge and is not a guy that breaks down when somone says somthing negative about him. This may be one of his better qualities as a young player which will help his career greatly.
If anyone can benefit from a goal oriented contract at a decent payday to start with, it is AB17. Afterall he set a goal to be a allstar center and that gives the lakers a measuring point financially as long as they show him that is what they believe him to be capable of which lessens things from looking like a lowball offer.

the only reason why im saying bynum shouldnt get more is because, even though jeferson put up great stats he still came out and said, "im not worth max contract"...Bynums been doing good, but i stil dont think he deserves MAX money just yet
Of course he doesn't, but he's gonna get paid on potential. Kwame's making 9 mill this year, you think he deserved that? Depending on the beginning of next season, I still think he's gonna get at least 5 year 60 mill. He knows how much LA has invested in him.

He can't get the max just yet, I'd give him a contract between Kaman and Jefferson. We still have Kobe, Odom, and Ariza contracts to deal with in the near future. I know people want Odom gone, but his versatility is something so rare and will be difficult to replace. U have to assume he'll still be there, but Odom wants to finish his career as a Laker, so I don't think Money will be such a issue with Odom. Kobe will DEMAND the MAX, because he's KOBE. But With Bynum's play now, one would have to assume that he is the TOP PRIORITY in the Laker Organization. If Bynum and Kobe really want to win, then they will work for what's best for ALL parties.

Agreed, i dont know if he is worth max yet, maybe some kind of contract where the value gets higher each year and its based on performance.
I agree with both og you.
But, Bynum is still young and humble so I don't think he will be another Shaq.
