Boston can't offer Posey more years than us I think. They signed him last summer, and thus haven't got his early bird rights which takes 2 years to get. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure we can offer exactly the same as Boston and as for the same amount of years.

bird rights take 3 yrs = team can offer any amount they want
early bird rights take 2 yrs = team can offer 175% of previous salary

If I'm the Lakers I offer Jordan Farmar & Lamar Odom to the Pistons for Chauncey Billiups. After that if I'm Mitch then I offer James Posey the full MLE for 5 years like they did Luke Walton and the full LLE for 2 years with a team option to Kwame Brown, because Bynum needs a back-up and I don't think Mihm can cut it. The Lakers can match any offers on Vujacic and Ronny both may take the Qualifying Offers.

2008-09 Lakers Roster:

PG - Chauncey Billiups/Derek Fisher/Joe Crawford
SG - Kobe Bryant/Sasha Vujacic/Coby Karl
SF - James Posey/Luke Walton/Trevor Ariza
PF - Pau Gasol/Ronny Turiaf/Vladimir Radmanovic
C - Andruw Bynum/Kwame Brown/Chris Mihm

That's a championship contender there folks. It would toughen them up and would make a run at a championship for sure.

Hmm I was thinking we sign Posey then trade Odom for Artest so Posey can go back to his usual sixth man role...

Wiretap

"I would say so," Bartelstein said. "When you get a taste of a championship, you want to keep winning them. The Lakers are a great team."

Posey's Agent

I don't understand why Boston wouldn't keep Posey around at all costs. I would.

Fisher, remembered, “We weren’t sitting around waiting for something to happen to become one of the best teams in the league. We set out to become that.”

Oh screw it already, just get him, re-sign Vujajic, and Turiaf and move Odom.

Signing Posey would be pretty big because not only does it improve our team, it also hurts the team we just went up against in the Finals.

Posey was expected to opt out ever since he signed a contract with the Celtics, and has said that he definitely wants to return. But I am sure he won't take a pay cut.

Not if we get Maggette, whom we made an offer.

Emotionally, taking a large piece from the championship run would hurt, whether or not you got Maggette (who I'd also love to have, although he doesn't have the range of Posey)

Even if we don't sign Posey, the willingness to do so would seem to indicate on some level that finances aren't going to be much of a concern for the front office. Which has to be a good thing, right? Particularly if we use Lamar's contract to get better as opposed to letting him walk stricly for financial relief.

so the early bird gets the worm, and then can give you 175% of it :)

is there any timetable for his decision?
