RGM's Top 25 Most Valuable Players - Vote for #4

Post#1 » by Trader_Joe » Tue Dec 18, 2012 1:45 am

Real GM's TnT Board Top 25 Most Valuable Players

1. LeBron James
2. Kevin Durant
3. Kyrie Irving

With December 15th here, seems now is as good a time as any for our annual list of players with the most trade value. After this is done we will move on to the annual list of players with the most negative trade value.

Please vote for the player that you think currently has the most trade value and please list a nominee that should be added the voting list. Remember this is trade value, so factors such as salary/contract, age, potential, production, injuries, etc. should all be factored in to your vote.

The current nominees based upon last year's top 10:

Melo

James Harden.

I'll like to point out that Harden is 23. Only 1 year older than Rubio and Holiday and he is averaging 25/4.4/5.3 on 58%TS. He's also locked up for another 5 years.

Brandon Roy's BEST season EVER in his career is 22.6/5.1/4.7.

Top 5 scorer in the league thats 23 years old. Anybody who takes 34yr old kobe right now over Harden is ****ing crazy.

This is a hard one for me... it's between Westbrook and Carmelo for me.

Both have long term deals and good health histories. Carmelo is scoring 7 points and 1.7 rebounds more on better efficiency, but Westbrook is younger, cheaper and has 6.7 more assists. Both on good teams, both can play good defense when the need arises.

I'm gonna give the nudge to Westbrook. While the (per36) difference between 21 points on 41.5% shooting and 28.2 points on 47.3% shooting is huge, I hesitate because 6.7 assists is the equivalent of 13.4 extra points and Melo has an A/T ratio less than one. Westbrook is also killing the boards.

Vote: Westbrook
Nominate: Harden

(EDIT: I didn't see Guy's nomination when I wrote this and was surprised Harden hadn't been mentioned... Looks like he thought the same, Harden is one of my next couple votes, above players already listed)

Vote: Chris Paul

Him being an unrestricted free agent is a gamble, but I think he really likes where he is.

Nominate: Ricky Rubio.

One is averaging 24 points at 20yr old.

The other has been hurt all season and he's 22 yr old.

One is not like the other. I dont understand these Rubio nomination. Jrue Holiday is healthy and averaging 18.5/9. If any young PG deserve it, its him.

Well, Rubio was sporting a 35 PER in his first game back .. and JRue doesn't have the same superstar potential or off-court stardom. As the NBA develops its connection world-wide, spoon-fed by ESPN and youtube highlight plays, Rubio is perfectly positioned to be extremely profitable.

In his 2nd game he shot 0-3 with 3 turnover, 4 assist. His PER if you check again later tonight will dropped to the teens and his TS% will be under .450. Its a 2 game sample size so i'm not going to take it seriously.

I didn't want to mention stats for that reason. He just came back from a major injury and is limited to 15mpg. So stat isn't going to be fair to him.

If marketing opportunity is that important should Jeremy Lin be in the top 25? Besides Kobe and Lebron, Lin is probably the most recognizable name in basketball right now.(the answer is no)

Why not? Same age. Already averaging 18/9. Very big, fundamentally very solid defender, and quick and athletic. Has a higher assist % then Rubio had last year, and is a good outside shooter (while Rubio's shot is a work very much in progress). I'm not sure why anyone would say that Holiday doesn't have the superstar potential that Rubio has at all. He was a McDonald's All American and now as a 22 year old is 3rd in the league in assists, certainly sounds like teh type of player that has that potential. Granted neither may make it -- most players don't -- but I can't see a reason to say Jrue doesn't have that potential, he definitely has all the physical tools and then some and has been playing extremely well for those who paid attention. (Off court stardom Rubio has hands down.)

I would say "yes." I'm sure the player's marketability is a major factor in what real GM's are willing to give up for a guy. Lin is tremendously valuable to HOU, if they still have those close television contracts with China. I would put him in the Top 25.

Put me in the camp that marketing gets you points here. I don't see Lin sneaking into the top 25, but last I saw the guy was third in guards in all star voting. So it clearly is something. And that something translates into some trade value.
