You also did not mention endorsements which are much higher in NY as the only star on the team vs. 3rd wheel behind Harden and Howard and 4th fan favorite behind those 2 and Parsons.

BTW.. I thought Melo had to pay taxes on his 41 road games?

You are correct, i forgot about the half road game part, and I also have been informed that New York has a city tax as well!

City tax is:
18k + 3.876% of amount over 500k.

Revised amounts:

So assuming Melo signed his max (7.5% raises) with New York at:

1.) 22,993,125
2.) 24,717,609
3.) 26,571,430
4.) 28,564,288
5.) 30,706,609

Total:
5 years: 133,553,063
4 years: 102,846,454

State Taxes:
1.) 992,931
2.) 1,068,981
3.) 1,150,735
4.) 1,238,620
5.) 1,333,096

City Taxes:
1.) 444,916
2.) 478,337
3.) 514,264
4.) 552,885
5.) 594,404

Total Net of Taxes
5 years: 125,183,893
4 years: 96,404,783

As for the Rockets, if this this cat is too be believed:
Bill Oram: NBA salary cap has been set at $63.2 million per source. Projections were $62.5-62.9 Twitter @bill_oram

And assuming the following:
-The trades suggested in this thread occur
-Garcia agrees to opt out of his player option and sign again for the same amount using vet exception
-Cannan and Beverley's non guaranteed deals are waived and resigned for the same amount

The Rockets max offer would be:
1.) 20,092,767
2.) 21,097,405
3.) 22,152,276
4.) 23,259,889

Total: 86,602,337

If they moved Terrence Jones, then they could get it up to a 91 million dollar offer.

Money wise, on 4 year deals, it is fairly neglible. Not sure if New York will even offer 5 years, because who wants to be paying Melo 30 million dollars at age 35?

I'm sure NY would if it means keeping him.
Also, I think the endorsement gap would be wide.

Either way your not selling Melo on Houston for money.
You have to sell him on being a third wheel to win a title.

Rockets send Jeremy Lin, Dontas Motiejunas and their 2014 #1 pick to Utah for Capspace only.

The Jazz have been receptive to this type of deal, specifically in the prior year with Golden State where they made a similar deal. Dmo is a young big with some great post moves, although he is a bit raw and needs time to develop and the pick has some value, although it will be later in the draft. Lin is an expiring contract with the balloon payment, but isn't a bad player. In Utah he can play to his strengths, rather than taking a back seat to Harden. Cash considerations can be included in this deal to help offset the balloon payment.

Trade Two:
Rockets send Omer Asik to Boston in exchange for 1-2 future draft picks (2015 or later). Perhaps the Philly pick and a second rounder or similar.

Boston has been interested in Asik in the past, but a deal was never made which struck Morey's fancy.

The Rockets would make these moves to clear the cap space needed to sign Carmelo Anthony. These deals would be unlikely to happen if he re signed with the Knicks or went to the Bulls. Final lineup:

Beverley / Canaan / (Brooks?)
Harden / (Garcia?)
Parsons / (Casspi?)
Melo / Jones
Howard / (Steisma?)

:D

Didn't read the whole thread or even Part 1 (sorry) but wouldn't it just be easier to send Lin, Asik, and Motiejunas to Philly for cap space? Philly can eat all 3 and it saves you your draft pick.

I don't mind it from Utah's perspective, but I would try and hold out for Jones over Monte...DM is fine, but if Houston really thinks they have a chance at Melo they'd almost have to do it.

I think it is a little too much for a single team to swallow both balloon payments, which is 30 million dollars. I am sure fans would say yes, but the owners I think would have serious reservations. The pick almost has to go, because it clears up additional cap room needed.

I'd wonder if the Lin trade might make more sense with Philly if the Boston portion happened. Since then you would be slightly improving the Sixers and increasing the chances(even if they're still not very high) that they could squeeze into the playoffs in 2015 and thus give you the 2015 Sixers first.

There's no real back-up PG after MCW so Lin would provide that and the Houston 1st could be a prospect who doesn't have a very developed all-around game, but maybe one specific skill-set (good 3-point shooter, defensive specialist, whatever) who comes off the bench for 10-15 a night and plays a certain role.

Oh no, that's the thing. The Sixers wouldn't be eating EITHER of the balloon payments. They have sights on moving both Lin and Asik elsewhere for other assets. Since they would be flipping them alone, they can turn right around and move them. If HOU needs to move their pick too to lose the salary slot, the Sixers will certainly take that as well.

The endgame in all this for Houston is getting Melo, obviously.

Just send Asik, Lin, D-Mo and a 1st to NYC and get Melo directly that way.
