Johnson To Sign Guaranteed, 3-Year Rookie Deal With Rockets

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Thu Jul 24, 2014 12:32 am

Nick Johnson, the 42nd overall pick in June’s NBA draft, will sign a fully guaranteed, three-year rookie contract with the Houston Rockets, a league source told RealGM.

Johnson fell to the Rockets in the second round after his junior season at the University of Arizona, where he averaged 12.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists.

Guys taken at 42 usually have 3 year deals with only money guaranteed in 1 year. This is a win for him, and conversely not great for Dallas.

Also, interesting that it does not have a team option 4th year, which was a contraversy with a certain former 2nd round Dallas pick.

Finally, a 3 year deal means it is using either cap space, or the (with room) MLE. So, if it is the latter, that is significant for Jameer. If it is the former, people watching their offseason closer than I have should confirm.

Good call. Parsons 2.0? Also interesting that it could prevent them from further signings, I guess they like him enough to run some backup PG.

What does Dallas have to do with it?

The Rockets are currently operating over the cap.

They have about 5m left of the MLE.

Wouldn't be surprised if that is used on Marion.

Oh wow. I contrasted it with the original Houston Parson contract, and then Johnson ended up on Dallas too.

Sorry Houston fans.

So Johnson will eat into this amount then, leaving Hou with less than the full MLE.

So no team option on the final year? That's probably for the best...
