Draft day trade: MIN 2015 1st pick + Pekovic for Melo

Post#1 » by PhilDMonkey » Fri Feb 27, 2015 9:00 am

MIN get: Melo
Get an established all-star with 3 years left in his contract, the Rubio-Wiggins-Melo-Dieng lineup will immediately bring them back to the playoff picture.

NYK get: Pekovic, Young, 2015 1st pick
Losing nearly $10 in long-term salary and getting a top 1st pick would give the NYK a nice start in their rebuilding process.

The problem with the proposed trade is that Minnesota's young core is a couple of years away, while Melo is at the end of his prime years. It doesn't really make sense to trade a top 5 pick that would grow with the Wolves core for a guy whose production will only decline. The time window for when the Wolves should be competitive and Melo's productive years just don't overlap so it's an easy no from Minnesota.

A side note, Young has already been traded.

Young is in Brooklyn, but regardless, 2015 1st is too steep.

Pekovic, Martin, Budinger, 2019 1st round pick (lottery protected) for Melo.

Knicks draft PG, sign starting PF and SF (Monroe + Harris?)

DP/Galloway/Calderon
Martin/Hardaway/Budinger
Harris?/Early/Wear
Monroe?/Acy/
Pekovic/FA

Rubio/LaVine
Wiggins/Robinson/DP
Melo/Muhammed
Bennett/Payne/Garnett
Dieng/DP

Melo is never going to agree to go to Minnesota.

Probably too soon for the Wovles to add a player like this anyway.

And if Im the Knicks and Im trading Melo for a pick, I certainly don't want Pekovic and his contract coming back. Would have to find a 3rd team to take him and then argue over who pays the value to move him.

If the Knicks aren't getting back any immediate(or much in the next 3 years really) financial relief and aren't getting any incentive, why in the world would they deal him for some role players? This is the exact wrong thing for the Knicks to do.

i dont get it for the knicks.

pekovic doesnt help them now or later. and carmello at 25M per isnt really much worse then Pekovic at 12M per for them given carmellos talent and draw and peks injury history.

the knicks have their own 2015 pick which projects to be higher, so i dont see the minnesota pick really being all that valuable to them.

i think they go hard after gasol, then use their own high lotto pick to get a 3rd guy in there to pair with gasol/melo

Minneapolis has two things Melo and Lala will want to avoid - Kevin Garnett and General Mills, maker of Cheerios.

I don't really think it makes much sense for either side. Its a horribly flawed concept from conception all the way through.

Well, if this trade went down KG would surely retire at the end of the year.

As far as Melo trades go,

NYK
In - Gasol/MIrotic/2015 SAC 1st/2015 CLE 1st (swap)
Out - Anthony

CHI
In - Griffin/Reddick/Barnes
Out - GIbson/Gasol/Mirotic/2015 SAC 1st/2015 CLE 1st (swap)

LAC
In - Anthony/Gibson
Out - Griffin/Reddick/Barnes
Well at least we're not Detroit!

if Carmelo Anthony forced his way out of Denver, I'm sure he would force his way out of Minnesota.

Yeah Melo would definitely try to leave and I rather have the 1st round pick than Melo anyways

We all pretty much agree Melo vetoes this trade right?

And FYI, Minneapolis/St Paul is significantly bigger, a bigger TV market, and generally considered a 'higher standard of living' then Denver. That's not why this doesn't work. Melo loves his wife to death and is staying East Coast to be with her.

This is interesting. Although I would assume the Knicks would prefer to keep Griffin in a deal that sent Melo to the Clippers. I assume Melo would ok a deal to play in Los Angeles with Chris Paul. But the question is would the Clippers do this if they don't have a deep playoff run to switch things up and what other pieces would be involved.

I think New York should also consider the Gasol, Mirotic, 2 1st rd pick offer from Chicago or something along those lines. If Chiacgo doesn't go on a playoff run do they consider switching it up.

The Knicks shouldn't give Carmelo away, but if they can get a prospect like Mirotic they should at least consider it.

Not that I think they should do it but if a team is going to trade a top 5 pick for Melo is going to be the Lakers.
The feedback I've received from our fans is they understand we are trying to build something great. Good decisions come from having a broad set of options and making tough calls. We will do it unblinkingly. We have to be willing to take smart risks-Hinkie

Melo wouldn't agree to Minny. And it's too soon for them to go for that anyway.

From a value perspective though, 2015 1st is very nice.

It actually makes me wonder if the Lakers would consider dealing their pick for Melo.

If the Knicks could get the Lakers top 5 pick plus the HOU pick they need to pull the trigger.
