Survey: Players that are worth Second Round pick(s)

Post#1 » by MatthewGeigerII » Wed Aug 17, 2016 6:09 pm

Trying to assess some value here . Which players currently on your rosters could be had for either

a) 1 second round pick
b) 2 second round picks
c) a combination of other things with these (i.e. add a stashed player or cash considerations or protect the picks)

For reference I have went back and sifted through the past 3 years for deals only involved a player(s) and incoming seconds:

2015-16:
Draft rights to hernagomez for 2 future seconds
Jarnell Stokes for 1 second round pick
Ish Smith for 2 second round picks
Ray McCallum for 1 second round pick
Reggie Bullock, Danny Granger, Marcus Morris for 1 second round pick (cap clearing)
Jared Dudley for 1 second round pick
Zaza Pachulla for 1 second round pick
Roy Hibbert for 1 second round pick
Mo Harkless for 1 second round pick
Rakeem Christmas for 1 second round pick
Shabazz napier for 1 conditional second round pick

2014-15:
Jason Kidd (coach) for two second round picks
Alonzo Gee for 1 second round pick

2013-14:
-three team deal but mil end (jj reddick given, 2 seconds received)
-4 team but again MIL end (Luc Mbah a Moute for 2 seconds received & future considerations)
-Thomas Robinson for 2 stashed players and 2 future seconds
-Tony Wroten for Protected second
- Ryan Gomes + Cash for 2 conditional seconds
- Roger Mason Jr for conditional second

(you have your draft day trade downs, but not counting them)

i may have missed some or got a busted recap article but they seem accurate based on my memory.

Wow, seeing us land Marcus and Bullock for a second round pick never gets old.

And too bad we can't include getting Reggie for two seconds. Technicality - we gave up two pretty useless players in the deal as well.

Reggie really did the team dirty that year. :nonono:

As far as the thread topic, I think it's important for people to keep in mind the distinction between "worth" and "would be traded for". And not all 2nds are created equal. There's a huge difference between "unprotected LAL 2nd" and "top-55 protected SAS 2nd".

yes exactly... and i would guess if you were to graph player production vs. value .. some of these players (dudley, zaza, gee) would come out above the median line and players like christmas, gomez, mason jr. would come out below.

that's kind of where i'm at with this topic. Seeing what exactly IS that line.. Ish Smith/ McCallum level? Harkless, T Rob level?

Mavs you could have for a 2nd round pick (no exclusions):

Dwight Powell
Devin Harris
Quincy Acy
any of the partial gte guys

Guys who are worth a 2nd or less, but that I wouldn't want to trade for a 2nd because we need them and/or I have hopes for them:

JJ Barea
Deron Williams
Salah Mejri
AJ Hammonds (okay I'd probably trade him)
Seth Curry

Players worth too much for me to trade them for any deal where a 2nd is the best asset:

Dirk
Bogut(yes I realize we just got him for less than a 2nd)
Justin Anderson

Players whose value is hard to peg because they make so much money, but that I wouldn't currently deal for any package of 2nds:
Harrison Barnes
Wes Matthews

basically all of our backups besides Frank & Wood (and Cody if he somehow loses the starting job and Marvin if he loses the job to Frank)

OK, I'll bite.

Unconditional:

Josh Huestis
Ronnie Price
Kyle Singler

Dependent on whether he decides to put down the blunt or not:

Mitch McGary

Probably worth a 2nd but too useful to the team to trade for just picks:

Anthony Morrow
Nick Collison

Worth 2 seconds or a low 1st:

Andre Roberson
Alex Abrines
Ersan Ilyasova

Sixers:

excluding 3 players just signed (bayless, henderson, sergio)

Worth a conditional/top 55 protected second (aka used in taking on a salary for dumping purposes):
Brandon Paul
Shawn Long
James Webb III
Rights to Micic

Worth 1 second:
Kendall Marshall
Carl Landry
Hollis Thompson
TJ McConnell*

Worth 2 seconds:
Richaun Holmes
Luwawu

Worth 2 seconds + sweetener ( or heavy protected 1st- pick in 20s ):
Jerami Grant*
Robert Covington*

*would probably rather keep on team to see how they pan out than trade.

Utah:

Not worth anything, candidates to be cut: Chris Johnson, Tibor Pleiss

Worth a 2nd or maybe two crappy ones: Mack, Ingles, Neto, Diaw, Withey

Worth more than that: everyone else

As dbrandon points out, that doesn't mean that everyone listed is *available* for a 2nd or two. That list would be Johnson and Pleiss (lol), one of Mack or Neto.

Ingles for Hollis Thompson could be an interesting swap. Cheaper and younger.

(Hoping the values in this thread could lead to other threads with closer values - so people can easily match column A with column A, b with B and so on for non-all star types)

Ingles is too valuable as a chemistry guy to trade for someone who's close to him in ability. His value to the Jazz far exceeds that of any other team. Hayward's best friend on the team + Exum's favorite player growing up.
