Pick your story: P.J. Tucker

Post#1 » by csuriano » Fri Feb 10, 2017 8:06 pm

I think most PHX fans would agree that we would like to keep Tucker and even re-sign him in the offseason for a reasonable contract. Having said that, if he requested a trade to a contender he deserves that respect. Here are a few small Tucker trades I thought of. Feel free to choose ones you think are the best or add your own. PHX doesn't need 2nd rounders so we would be looking for young players and/or a first.

Trade 1:
PHX trades Tucker for Muhammad
MIN trades Muhammad for Tucker
This one actually has legs. I read that this deal was discussed by both FO's. Tucker gives to MIN (Wiggins, Lavine) what he gave to PHX and Booker. PHX gets a backup to Booker who can score. PHX can match in the offseason after evaluating during the remainder of the season.

Trade 2:
PHX trades Tucker for Bazemore
ATL trades Bazemore for Tucker
Bazemore was rated #9 as a least valuable contract here but PHX can take a flier and hope for improvement while eating some salary. ATL gets a defensive player with heart who is thirsty for wins. For a playoff team, he can be a huge asset.

Trade 3:
PHX trades Tucker, 2017 PHX 2nd for Carrol/2017 TOR 1rst or Carrol/Caboclo
TOR trades Carrol/2017 TOR 1rst or Carrol/Caboclo for Tucker, 2017 PHX 2nd
Seems like some are down on Carrol lately after a highlight run in ATL. We can take him and move up a few spots in this draft while sending out Tucker who can guard LeBron and provide something that TOR lacks. TOR also loses salary so they can resign their players this offseason. Adding in Joseph instead of Carrol works as well if PHX is intent on moving Knight so feel free to add him in.

Any of these sound reasonable? Any better ideas for Tucker and PHX? Feel free to add.

With all respect to Minny fans, it seems odd to say you'd grant Tucker's request to join a contender and then trade him to Minny this year ;)

I do like that first one. The other two have Phoenix taking on quite a bit of salary for players who haven't exactly excelled this year. Do you have high hopes for a bounce-back in new surroundings?

I likethe first one, makes good sense for Minnesota and Phoenix. Additionally, I was also thinking:

Tucker + 2017 Suns 2nd
for
Sullinger + 2017 Clippers 1st

And then the first trade sends him to the Timberwolves.

Actually, I can see the merit for both sides in the Minnesota deal. Tucker seems like the type of gritty veteran presence that Thibs is looking for. He would work rather well for the rest of the starting lineup for the rest of the year and gives the Wolves a look at the type of player they should look to pursue between Wiggins and Towns with LaVine out.

For Phoenix, the kick the tires on a player with some semblance of upside still left. Both players are expiring so it doesn't change things much either way. I personally think that Muhammad doesn't bring much to the table that someone like Warren doesn't already do better, but his age fits much better with their core and if the cost is Tucker they aren't losing much. Rumor is that Phoenix is holding to their demand for a first rounder, which I definitely would not add if I were Minny.

I don't think Phoenix goes for Atlanta or Toronto deals. Carroll and Bazemore are both tied up for too long and and don't move the needle for Phoenix. Both can be solid complementary players but you need that top talent in place first. Booker/Bender/Chris's might be that type of talent and they might not. If those three or warren continue to develop then you are paying DeMarre or Kent big bucks to rot on a bench where you already have Dudley. You could just hold onto Tucker and keep your future cap open down the line.

Uh. No?

if he requested a trade to a contender he deserves that respect.

Uh. Why? He's not Steve **** Nash. Because he's played here 5 years?

I like the Toronto one. Maybe add Joseph and Wright, with Knight going to Toronto, Phoenix keeps their 2nd?

I'm always hesitant to include Knight in trades now but I would do this.

PHX in: Carrol, Joseph, 2017 TOR 1rst
PHX out: Tucker, Knight

TOR in: Tucker, Knight
TOR out: Carrol, Joseph, 2017 TOR 1rst

Its a lot of salary for PHX to take on, but we essentially pay 7 million more per year (21mil) for 2 years rather than keeping Knight (12mil) for 3. I think both teams get something here but maybe a third team like PHX who could absorb Carrol (BKN?) could mediate.

I'm fairly certain Carroll is better than Knight. And the extra year for Knight (it's $40M over 3 years btw, not $12M per) makes it even worse.

And even if you want to call Carroll and Knight a wash, a first + Joseph for Tucker is a massive overpay.
