12/15: HOU - SAC (VanVleet for DeRozan)

HOU Gets: DeMar DeRozan
HOU Gives: Fred VanVleet, 2026 CHI 2nd, & 2027 MEM 2nd
Why for HOU? Assuming the Rockets get off to a solid start, they may prefer to capitalize on their opportunity to win a championship while Durant remains effective. Instead of having $25 mil in salary (VanVleet) waste away on the bench this season, the Rockets swap him with another playmaker and scorer that can help pickup the load when defenses clamp down.

PG -Thompson / Sheppard / Holiday
SG - Smith Jr. / Okogie
SF - Eason / DeRozan / Tate
PF - Durant / DFS / Green
C - Sengun / Adams / Capela

SAC Gets: Fred VanVleet, 2026 CHI 2nd, & 2027 MEM 2nd
SAC Gives: DeMar DeRozan
Why for SAC? Assuming the Kings are trending towards another middling season, they do right by DeRozan and move him to a serious contender. In exchange, they get a couple of 2nd round picks and a potential starting PG next year that fits the way Christie wants to play. If VanVleet doesn’t pick up his option, then the Kings essentially salary dumped DeRozan’s contract a year early and picked up a couple 2nds while doing so.

PG - Schroder / Monk / VanVleet
SG - Ellis / Carter / Davis
SF - LaVine / Clifford / McDermott
PF - Murray / Saric / Jones
C - Sabonis / Eubanks / Raynaud

I don’t understand the concept of player for Houston. At all. Or why FVV would agree to this deal with his implicit no trade clause? Or why Sacramento is paying good value for a guy who won’t play this year?

Oh! At first I misread the seconds as GOING TO HOUSTON. absolutely no reason for Houston to pay this price for a guy who doesn’t fit?

Oh I didn’t know VanVleet has a NTC. Probably not realistic that he would waive that to go to SAC then.

He has an implicit no trade because his 2 year contract has a player option, so it COULD BE a one year deal, which means he could lose his full Bird Rights if traded (and opted out).

Teams get better when Derozan leaves and they get worse when he arrives.

Besides, Houston would be looking for a PG in any FVV trade.

I'd rather have Fred VanVleet sitting on the bench in a full body cast than Demar DeRozan. I wouldn't even want DeRozan to play on my team for free. There's nothing about his game that fits what the Rockets are hoping to do, nor does his game fit anywhere in 2025 if you're asking him to take on a sizable role.

DDR would be a truly wretched fit on the Rockets. I can't see them having any interest no matter what the price.
