simple Mia/LAL

Post#1 » by miamiballer » Mon Nov 9, 2009 1:47 am

miami trades: james jones, 2nd rd pick
miami gets: adam morrison

LAL trades: adam morrison
LAL gets: james jones

why?

james jones haas a 2 mil buyou next yr that counts against the cap, morrison is expiring...therefore miami saves an additional 2 mil in cap for 2010

LA gets the superior player in jones and can, if they choose, buy him out in 2010 and have it count only 2 mil in 2010

you'd have to include more incentive for LAL to do this, Jones wouldn't get enough PT to warrant this IMO.

The trade helps the Lakers reduce their tax payments. The Heat doesn't have a need for Adam Morrison. For the Heat, the trade is like dumping the $1.85m salary of James Jones next season in expense of a 2nd rnd pick.

jones wouldnt get any PT, and would on downtime trying to pick up the triangle...

works out to LA taking on more money overall, and the 2nd round pick doesnt really offset it

LA needs more incentive

If the salary numbers are correct at ESPN, pursuant to this trade, LA saves almost $1.0mm in salary or $2.0mm with the LT, gets a draft pick which it can re-sell (around $1.5mm) and better talent with a lower contract that is easier to dump. Jones may even be useful and his contract is below the MLE.

Miami is doing this to create another $2.0mm in 2010 cap space.

While I agree that Jones will not play much, do not the economics work out in LA's favor if you assume that they can sell the Miami 2d rounder in a deep 2010 draft? The money is a draw if the draft pick is unsold.

LA should be ahead $1.0mm if they buy out Jones. With a smaller salary, LA could re-trade Jones for an even smaller salary this year or next or trade another player like Vujacic and keep Jones. If you want more incentive from Miami, you could add conditional cash to cover the buy-out of Jones in 2010.

An adjustment CAN be made to include Miami's 1st rounder (lotto protected) with the Lakers adding MEM's 2nd rounder which LA controls...

This year every team will want expirings at the deadline.

There will be over 230 free agents this offseason, by far the most in history.

Its a good deal normally but its worth 1.5% to roll the dice near the trade deadline
Lakers are 22-3 in OT last 6 seasons:Kobe best OT closer!

your math is ok, up until you forget to include the 2 mil that counts against LA's salary would be on the hook for next season with an additional 2mil in luxury tax too you realise right?

saving 2 mil (only 1.84 mil actually) this season, paying 4 mil next season, and only getting a 2nd rnd pick in return?

so, unless LA gets more incentive, (ie. money, more picks), theres just no way this deal gets off the ground.

not to mention there are better partners other than luxury tax teams to trade jones to
