Value of young guys?

Post#1 » by dflaschberger » Sat Dec 26, 2009 7:21 pm

I would like a discussion as to the value of the league's young talent-all guys still on rookie deals. I am making a post centering around Rose for CP3.

I will follow Bill Simmons' criteria-age/position/salary/injuries all count.
Top guys from each draft class

06-Bargs/LMA/Roy/Gay/Rondo
07-Durant/Hortford/Noah/Oden/Green
08-Rose/Beasley/Mayo/Westbrook/Love/Lopez/ARandolph
09-Griffen/Harden/Evans/Curry/Jennings

I might be leaving a candidate off here or there-but I think all the top young guys are listed. Years left on deal count-cheaper for longer.

1-Durant-obvious
2-Evans-looks awesome right now-seems like a good kid
3-Rose-coming around-out-of-this-world talent
4-Roy-oldest guy in group-has max extension-some injury history-but most accomplished player
5-Lopez-A true center-will get better
I see those as the big 5-all elite prospects/players
6-Griffen-injury scary, but incredible kid/talent
7-Rondo-only guy with a ring-plays with so much talent it's tough to say his level
8-Jennings-cooled off a bit, but he seems to have 'it'-and is cheap for years
9-Westbrook-turnovers and poor shooting big slips for him
10-Hortford/Noah/Love-can't decide-all similar level-future all star bigs

can't make the cut-Mayo and Beasley-I just don't like their games-big talents though

I would not trade a young center who plays his a-- off every nite and is improving for any of those guys-Hortford either. Position matters. I was reading one scout-he said Noah was the best defensive center in the league-because of his pick and roll ability (which is a huge part of the game now).

No way I would trade noah for any of those guys-although they are all better scorers

You lose your credibility when you put Anthony Randolph on the '08 list but not Jason Thompson. Similar for the '07 list after making the comment about injury, et. al., you add Oden who has missed most of his CAREER thus far and leave off Hawes.

This list looks more like an NBA marketing list than a true talent list.

I know, how is he gonna leave off Donte Greene and Omri Casspi too?!

I'd say

Durant - superstar-potential
Roy - star
Rose - star potential
Lopez - star potential
Griffen - star potential
Evans - star potential - riskier though
Rondo - almost-a-star, but questions if he could do it off the Celtics. He's well-paid now.

After that, they all sort of merge togther. I'd have selfishly included Jonny Flynn and maybe Casspi for this year, but neither make my top 7.

First, is Derrick Rose really more valuable than Brook Lopez in people's minds? Really???

Secondly, where is Marc Gasol?

Thirdly, what is the age limit when we talk about "young guys"? Brandon Roy is older than LeBron James, Dwight Howard and Chris Paul after all...
Some people really have a way with words. Other people... not... have... way.

Gasol could easily be on there-not sure about Thompson-I like his game. It is guys on rookie deals.

And yes, I think Rose has more value than Lopez-and I love Lopez

I think there is more demand for Brook Lopez than for Derrick Rose right now...

Gasol - he is on a rookie scale 2nd-rounder contract. The premise would then be flawed coz that would now also mean Luis Scola should be included here.

Jason Thompson is no star. Atleast not yet.
