Our bench makes no sense

Post#1 » by King_John » Thu Jan 10, 2013 11:47 pm

If you take a look at our bench we have MIller, Battier, Allen, Lewis and Jones. Which means five one-dimensional players who can only shoot (except BAttier he can play defense too). Adding to this we have our back-up PG Norris Cole and four big Men in Joel Anthony, Dexter Pittman, Josh Harrelson and now Jarvis VArnado (maybe). But except for Joel no other BIg even plays a **** minute. So I really have to question the Heat officials. They really screwed up. Instead of bringing in FIVE shooters they should have looked for some decent Big Men in the first place to build the roster. Now we are stuck with our bench who doesn t produce and can t grab a rebound to save their lives. I hope this doesn t come back to hunt us in the playoffs.

 i did wish mike miller retired but he's been shooting well this season when he plays but he doesn't rebound, im still happy about us getting ray allen because he's bringing consistent scoring most nights for us, right now hes still playing from an injury that made him play like **** in the playoffs for boston, noco has impressed me this year with his defense but still takes dumb ass shots on fast breaks that make me just smh & battier has been decent, nothing really changed in his game from last year but i still have faith that our bench will make a big impact when it matters the most...

Miller is hardly one-dimensional. He's one of our best rebounding wings, and he can give backup pg minutes, as he did when Rio was injured. The others, outide of Shane, are pretty one-dimensional though. PEACE.

Miller is probably a big reason our rebounding has fallen off. Should play more. But then he'd break.

If we had got the Mike miller we paid for that would have been insane. To say nothing of the haslem of old.

Ian Mahinmi got 4M/yr. Don't think any signed for tax payer MLE though.

It really is a shame that MM never really panned out for us. I always imagined he'd be a pretty decent trade asset down the line.

Yeah if Mike Miller actually delivered what we thought when we gave him that contract, we would be set. Oh well, that's what every GM thinks when they sign a player.

But if Miami had a better bench then there would be no competition for them. The crap that surrounds the Big 3 is the only reason the NBA championship is a contest.

OP makes a good point though. I know we don't have enough money to go out there and sign quality players but the way this roster is constructed now, I don't know why we have so many shooters. You don't need 6 shooters each playing 20 to 0 minutes in case one is having a bad day or something. Spo sticks to the same rotation, so it's pretty much redundant. Now we have Shard and JJ (both 3pt specialist) warming the bench instead of picking up a much needed big man or a PG with that money. Both would come really handy now, much more than another spot up shooter. Also, as the OP too pointed out, we have a cluster of trash big men who aren't doing anything for this team... and by anything I mean they aren't even getting minutes if any of Miami's front court (Bosh, UD, Joel) guys are out.

I think we could've built a more balanced collection of role players, who bring different things to the table. Not just sign 3 deadly shooters each year and fill everything else out with trash and picks...

What much needed big man or point guard of value would the Heat have signed for the same vet minimum level deals used on Rashard and JJ?

Like I said, not much... I know that, but in retrospect, here were/are some of the players which would likely be more useful for this team than Shard:

Reggie Evans - This dude rebounds better by himself then the whole Heat team combined. I love his attitude on the boards. He's a type of joker player you throw in when you're getting out-hustled and out-rebounded and he immediately helps. Although I don't know if he was willing to come here.

Ben Wallace - Old as dirt but still has a something in the tank. Definitely an upgrade over Pittman, Jorts, JJ, Shard and anyone else not playing.

Kenyon Martin - We've discussed this all too much lately.

Leon Powe - If he could stay healthy it would be interesting too see what he can do

That's about it for big men... As far as guards are concerned there really weren't any useful ones (except for Anthony maybe) but nobody expected Chalmers too play this poorly so we weren't even looking.

Out of that list Evans would clearly have a role. Much like Joel, it would be 4 on 5 offensively it. Though unlike Joel, and the bulk of the roster, the dude's pursuit of rebounds is relentless.

Unfortunately the pickings become slim on the free agent market when a team is as financially handcuffed as the Heat. It stands as the only negative repercussion of signing LeBron, Wade, and Bosh, but I'll take it.

Nate: Undersized gunner who doesn't defend and proceeds to gun while being very tiny. Offense isn't the Heat's problem. Plus he's a jackass. Riley would never pursue him.

Watson: Not sure what he would have added. Does he bring anything that Cole doesn't already provide?

Evans: Absolutely could have used him.

Blatche: Heat pursued him. He chose the Nets.

BULL CRAP.

We had money. You guys and Riley just thought it was a good idea to bring in Ray Allen instead of a big man like Marcus Camby or something.

I said it then and I say it now, adding Ray Allen when we already had Mike Miller, Shane Battier, James Jones..... so stupid.
