What's a better discount than a five-finger one?
Seriously though, I'm disgusted by the idea that some in our community feel there's logic in resorting to looting and violence because we disagree with a decision made by the authorities. It doesn't build anything other than further prejudice by those that already believe we're subhuman animals that are incapable of civility under pressure.
At the same time, I'm disappointed that more attention isn't being given to the police for some of the tactics they employed on the ground in Ferguson. I've seen tear gas being thrown at peaceful protesters, cars attempting to run over ordinary people, increasing a presence and blocking off places that weren't even the focus to begin with, etc.
It's all a mess right now. What I find amusing is that a lot of people on Facebook suddenly become law students and legal scholars once these things happen. I'm actually in law school and I always find it amusing. What I don't find amusing is how we only seem to get mad when the killer of a black person is white.
This is an issue for me because the news won't pay attention unless a white person does it, because the media doesn't necessarily care about people, but ratings. Viewership will rise if racism is suspected in a crime. How is that not disgusting to the rest of you?
If we're going to address gun violence or violence in general across this country, we can't simply shed light on the "sexy" news reports. Violence in the ghetto between blacks and latinos has been a problem since these weapons and drugs were introduced into these communities.
Yes, there are socio-economic reasons for this as well that play an enormous role, but when my own people (blacks and latinos) stop killing each other over nonsense, then we can start building one another. We need to realize that they don't care about us.
Until I see Al Sharpton and these other so-called modern day civil rights leaders lead protests and marches against senseless violence in general instead of whenever "the man" attacks them, I'll take these clowns seriously. Otherwise, they're political opportunists with cool hair and deluded values.
Give me Guardian US, BBC America, Al Jazeera America, and even RT America over the nonsense I see on MSNBC and CNN.
