Scouting the Draft- Karl Alzner

Post#1 » by Crowned » Wed Jun 6, 2007 3:54 am

Karl Alzner

Height: 6'2/6'3
Weight: 210-215 pounds
Team: Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
Projected Range: 4-8

Thoughts: The best defenseman in the 2007 NHL draft, hands down. Many view Alzner as a sure bet to make the NHL, and be a regular contributor in a defensive rotation. Alzner is extremely reliable and smart back on defense, and recieves praise from coaches and scouts for his game. Alzner still has a lot of potential, and being such a young player, he'll get better. Many believe that he'll be able to play in the NHL next season, but provided his age, it'll be wise to let him adjust to the pro game in the minors next season. Although his physical game often gets critiqued, I personally believe he uses his strength and size to his advantage, and is infact a good physical player...with excellent checking abilities.

Needs to work on: Offense. Alzner can move the puck out of his own zone effectively, but it's no secret that he needs to work on his offensive game. If you're looking for a defensive player, Alzner is your man. With additional experience, Alzner is expected to improve in this area.
