Woelfel on WSSP: Ellis not interested re Bucks extension

We need a separate thread on this. From the other thread, which I'll lock.

EastSideBucksFan wrote:Heard Woelfel on WSSP this morning.

One thing he said is he's heard that Hammond tried to initiate talks about an extension and Monta's camp has indicated to him that he has "no interest in returning beyond next year".....

So....what do we do with him at the deadline? (bc we aren't trading him before the season)

Really sucks having a lame duck GM in the office because he won't trade him for future pieces because in Hammonds mind he's "fighting for his job".....so we'll watch the Bucks be in a position to fight for the 8th seed and we keep Monta until the end of the season when he'll walk.

Awesome.

It's better that he opts out after this season if the Bucks are intent on not moving him. Granted, the ideal is getting a 2013 pick and/or young asset for him, but that won't happen if we're within any reasonable distance of the playoffs. I'll take $11M in cap space next summer over two years from now if I have the choice.

An Ellis extension to me is by far the worst case scenario of all the things that could happen with him. Thankfully it also looks like the least likely.

I think this is good news.

If Kohl really thinks he's not going to be able to keep someone, he'll move them. Given that Monta was a big part of the return on the Bogut trade, he won't want to lose the asset value.

Conventional wisdom would say that the team would start to explore possible trades if this news is accurate.

Yeah, we'll trade him for an older player on a longer, more expensive deal. That's how the Bucks do things.

too bad it won't be for draft picks/ young prospects.

The only good news is that Hammond was dumb enough to kill boguts value by insisting that sjax be involved. Hopefully gooden will be paired with ellis.

What does Gooden/Ellis bring back?

Would be $17.6 million of outgoing year one salary and a total of either $30mm guaranteed money or $41 million total if Ellis did not opt out.

Need to find a couple highly paid guys to make the salaries work.

HOU maybe? They give us Kevin Martin who the bucks can turn into the savior of the year and they eat gooden salary?

more ideas for gooden/monta.

Also phx, They are under the cap enough to take on Monta(I think) and you could swap gooden for a number of different players.

POR could do it, Matthews/Hickson/ and a few fillers.

TOR-Calderon,Derozan, fillers

Jazz-Mo and fillers.

Don't do anything now, but definitely flip him at the deadline. We may be a playoff team at the deadline, but we're not contender so there's ZERO reason to keep him. This is not a Matt Flynn situation.

I didn't see the audio link up on their site, I want to hear this.

This organization thinks short term, minimal success first, so if we're hovering around the 8th seed at the deadline, Monta isn't getting dealt. Yes, these future scenarios that we've boxed ourselves into have already been discussed on the board, but it always brings a smile to my face knowing that the Bucks are going to fulfill the prophecy of stupidity.

A return for Monta would be nice, even if it's rather small. The cap space of him straight walking isn't valuable enough for a franchise who will not use the cap space effectively. Ellis walks, we will overpay some new bums rather than use the space to absorb contracts/picks/young players to start our upturn. Boo Herb, boo cronies.

dump his a$$

TRADES
1- ellis – DAL – Marion 1st-LP
2- marion – TOR – kleiza 1st-LP
3- udrih gooden mdj – ORL – redick turkglu
4- turkglu 1st-LP – SAC – Evans

we give up – ellis mdj beno gooden
we get – 1st-LP evans redick kleiza

I know evans is hated by many here but he has talent & versatility. Maybe he’ll mature ala Zach. At any rate he’s no worse than ellis, is at least taller and he’s expiring. If he does well he is restricted and we can resign or S&T. Redick & Kleiza are efficient long range.

ROSTER-mins
Jennings-34 / Lamb-4
Redick-29 / Evans-29
Moute-22 / Harris-14 / Kleiza-12
Illysova-30 / Henson-18
Dalembert-24 / Udoh-12 / Sanders-12 / Pryz-0

Things not said in the Bucks War Room when switching their GSW focus from Curry to Monta:

"Hey, this Monta guy can terminate his deal at the end of '12-13, what are we going to do then?"
"Can we really give up our best asset (by far) for a rental?"
"The small backcourt didn't work in GS, why is it going to work here?"
"Long term, what does this do for us?"

What was said..

"We're close to the 8th seed."
"Bogut is always hurt."
"This Ellis guy is a 20 PPG scorer."
"Steven Jackson must go! I don't care that we can amnesty him if we want, or trade him next year as an expiring, or that we knowingly brought in a knucklehead, he must go!"

Ellis doesn't want to stay...I'm shocked.

Way to maximize the Bogut asset Hammond.

He'll change his tune when Kohl decides he'll pay more than anyone else.
