He is the one player I wish was healthy all year but I do not complain about it. You can't control that so why cry?
ReasonablySober wrote:I liked this article from Tim Grover this morning. Nothing new, but you hear it from a legend and it gets your attention. When NBA teams opened training camp this season, everyone was talking about one thing: weight loss. Many of the leagues superstars got serious (and competitive) about their weight, shedding fat, getting lean, taking selfies, and talking about how they did it. Low carb, ultra-low carb, no carb. In other words, they got rid of the sugar. That’s not new, it’s basic science: If you dramatically reduce your sugar intake, you’re going to lose weight. But most people think good nutrition is too complicated because they never learned to eat right. When should I eat? What should I eat? How much can I eat? What if I can’t cook? For a lot of folks, fast food is easy, grilled chicken breast is not.
I give my athletes what I call The List: a yes/no inventory of foods they can eat, and those they can’t. Here are your options, here’s what you’re giving up. No sugar, no dairy, no fruit, no breads, no alcohol. No junk. Three weeks. Proven results. Very simple, because I want my guys focused on practice and games, not counting almonds and weighing boiled meat. The weight of the game is enough pressure.
I'm gonna give it a shot. It's three weeks until Christmas so what the hell.

Starting this tonight with 'cheat days' planned for Christmas and New Years most likely.
Have you stumbled upon any good recipes? I was thinking of trying to make a salad dressing with olive oil, dijon mustard, vinegar, salt and pepper. Mostly going to try to focus on stir fries using olive oil/coconut oil and Tamari Soy Sauce.
ReasonablySober wrote:Buzzfeed has a good number of recipes that come close to fitting here and here. Just keep an eye on sugar content in some of those.
But the big thing I've noticed since I eliminated sugar is I don't get cravings or really that hungry anymore. The first thing I did when I started this was empty the pantry and fridge of all the food that wouldn't work under this plan, and replaced it all with veggies, spices, nuts and healthy fats. I had this idea that I'd be cooking dope recipes, like the ones above, regularly. But honestly, when you're not overly hungry it all just kind of seems like overkill.
One of my favorite things to do is dead simple:
Sautee onion, mushrooms and garlic
Add a veggie (broccoli, chopped asparagus, whatever)
Add whatever spices you like (I'm partial to cumin and paprika)
Cook until everything is done but firm and transfer it all to a plate to keep warm in the oven
Use the same pan to cook a protein over medium high for a couple minutes.
Boom, meal. Whole thing takes 15 minutes.
The other thing about the plan is eggs. I probably eat two dozen a week. It doesn't matter what I'm having for lunch or dinner, I'll add two or three.

I know it has carbs, but in my readings it seems to be a good compromise for someone like me (who has a carb inflated beer gut) to get off of breads while not killing my energy levels or completely starving myself.

Do you saute it in a fat? If so, that's exactly what I use to do a couple times a week when I first got going on paleo. A couple tbsp of a healthy fat to help digest those veggies really helped me.
I feel like in order to consume enough calories on a paleo diet you have to be getting 1500 plus from fats per day. Otherwise I would waste away to nothing. And don't worry about cholesterol if you're staying with quality products. I just got my bloodwork done 2 weeks ago and my doctor was really impressed at my "good" cholesterol number.
I eat a lot of white rice. I do chipotle a couple times a week and double up the rice. No carbs for like a week straight made me feel like a zombie.

Newz wrote:Yeah, my problem with paleo has always been that I try to get too intense with it too quick and then I just end up falling apart. Like you said in our society it is incredibly hard to actually follow the diet... the one with no fruit is going to be even more brutal.
The last time I did paleo it only lasted 2-3 weeks... but I saw a huge change in my body in a very short time. Next time I need to keep it up, but just add in a cheat meal every once and a while so I eventually don't fall apart and go back to bad eating habits again.

Paleo crosses over into Atkins/ketosis diets quite a bit. That makes them completely unique in that you CANNOT have a cheat meal because it will drop you out of ketosis for a few days. Which will completely destroy your results, especially if you have more than one cheat a week.
KingWing wrote:That is basically what I do Newz. Strict diets like paleo and the ketosis ones can be become such a burden that they are difficult to maintain for most people.
I go by the following mantra: Don't eat sugary things, and don't eat processed foods.
Sugar is the major one. Sugar is highly addictive and makes you crave it. Removing it will reduce unnecessary snacking.
