I've never seen Lightning Bolt in person but I don't think I'd ever compare that kind of show to Boris. And watching Torche play just before Boris, I can certainly say that they're completely different bands. Boris brings together prog, noise, improvisation and a wide range of metal; neither of those bands has does everything that they do.
They're intense (Boris), so I get where you're coming from and I suppose that the other two bands are high energy bands but they just don't compare.
I'd compare the experience of a Boris show more with those that I've seen such as Dinosaur Jr. (Farm tour in 09), Nels Cline & Glenn Kotche (06), Sonic Youth (06, 07, 09) and Kayo Dot (January) than I would with Torche (although they gigged together, have been label mates, etc.). Even though 3/4 weren't really metal related.
Although I once saw Northless (local drone metal band) play at mostly lame festival at the Mirimar Theatre in 2010 and I'd never heard them prior to that. Maybe I was just so blown away by them because I didn't anticipate witnessing a band of their kind that night but they just played a great show.
Afterward I'd bumped into one of the band members and made a point to ask him if he or anyone in Northless had ever listened to the band Krallice. As I was really getting into them at the time and the intensity of their playing reminded me of those records, even though they didn't quite sound alike.
What's great about me asking that is I had no idea they would go on to get their LPs pressed by the same Wisconsin company that does Krallice's (an NY based band btw) records: Gilead Media. And he didn't really seem to have actually listened to Krallice much, just said that he knew about them.
