Questions for John Hammond asked and answered

Post#1 » by Mr Anonymous » Wed Sep 17, 2014 10:47 pm

I'm going to be attending a golf and charity event for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation that the Bucks are holding this Monday. As part of the event schedule, there will be a Q&A session with John Hammond during the evening. When it comes time for me to ask my question, I'd like to have a good one lined up.

if we really intend to rebuild, Wolters, Giannis, Jabari, Middleton and Henson need to log atleast 25 min a night. Not only, that they need to play together so they can mesh. Can you promise that will happen this season?

How did you miss out on Eric Bledsoe in the Suns, Clippers 3 way trade in July 2013? What was the actual thought process there?

Softballs only! If I had a chance I'd like to know if he had any trades done in principal but were vetoed by Kohl. It have to be cleverly worded, but maybe something along the lines of...
In your 6+ years as GM there are have been rumors of deals that were very close to happening but did not end up happening. Some examples would be Joe Alexander for Mike Conley or more recently Josh Smith coming to Milwaukee the year Redick came at the deadline. Do these types of deal ultimately come down to you not feeling they are in the best interest of the team or do they need to have unanimous approval which includes ownership?

Can you describe the events that led to you pooping a Cornish game hen?

If you ask him anything about any past transgressions in a public setting, he won't give you a real answer. Save those for one on one if you get that opportunity. Just don't want you to waste your question.

I'd ask him if Giannis and Parker are locked in as starters this season.

Yeah, he's not going to touch past transgressions like the Bledsoe bungle or how Ferry screwed him out of Josh Smith.

Here though would be two I might consider asking:

a) What role is Jerryd Bayless going to play this year? To an outsider fan, he was the one off-season move that didn't make sense. i.e. picking up a journeyman veteran guard at a high price tag. Seemed like a repeat of the Gary Neal mistake. Where does he fit on this squad?

b) Predict for me the team's record this year or isn't the final record important?

1. Name the three things that need to happen for this season to be considered a success.

2. The Bucks haven't won a playoff series in over a decade. Realistically, when can this happen again, and when does it need to happen by to illustrate the long-term plan is working?

These are lousy, but I'd like to hear his answer:

-- What is your idea of an ideal point guard? What skills are important for an effective PG?

--Whose the best basketball player he's ever seen?

--What does the Buck organization do for at-risk players away from the court (think Joe or Larry) to help player be successful on the court?

--Ask him about scouting, drafting Giannis. How did that decision get made? How did he get on his radar? What was it that made him think to draft Giannis where he was drafted?

--How does he scout, or what does he look for in second round picks? Ask about the decision to pick some of the second rounders and what he saw.

--What past team does he compare this young Bucks roster to? What past team does he think they could be like?

--What would he like the D league to become? Like baseball minor leagues? What would he like to see improve in the D-league?
I admit to being a terrible judge of talent and having minimal knowledge of the game of basketball.

How do you envision the guard rotation to go this season?

Is Khris Middleton likely to play significant minutes at shooting guard?

This really is my most curious question for the team this year, not specifically guards, but the rotation as a whole. You brought in veteran players, some new rookies, is there concern that it may be hard to keep everyone happy with playing time - especially if the direction is go more youth.

And I do agree with the above, they aren't going to answer anything in the past or anything remotely tough most likely.

How many more years do you need to make this team a contender?

Were you forced into making certain moves by Kohl?

How much influence did you have over personnel moves during the previous regime?

You have been with the organization since 2008, do you have a higher sense of urgency to win now or is there an organizational plan you strive to follow that may involve more patience?
