I remember watching a Modest Mouse video once that had whales harpooning humans. It was quite interesting.

I actually find Kendrick's piece fairly boring. Obviously Kunta is great and the album is definitely artistic, but it's a boring listen to me.

I believe Heath Ledger actually directed that video.

Modest Mouse is pretty good times. The new album is solid.

Strung Out's new album, Transmission.Alpha.Delta is streaming here.

I LOVE it. Only through one listen but this might be my favorite album of theirs since Twisted By Design.

Do you listen to Earl Sweatshirt? If you find Kendrick's project boring then I'd like to hear what you would have to say about Earl's new album

I agree though, To Pimp A Butterfly isn't all that enjoyable of a listen to me. I understand he wanted to get away from GKMC comparisons but this is a bit too big of a switch up in his style for me

I love To Pimp A Butterfly a number of songs definitely grew on me, but it's getting non-stop play from me since last Monday. Definitely gives me memories on why I love hip-hop and takes me back to the days where I use to study lyrics for their meanings. I can't wait until July 1st when Q and him come to Summerfest! It's going to be so fun and I'm still shocked we got them both I can't believe it! I love them both and I remember when I first heard Setbacks and Overly Dedicated and never would have thought they would be headliners for Summerfest back then. I'm in Stan mode right now lol

To Pimp a Butterfly is a 97 on metacritic so far, critics love it and it has a higher score than most albums in general, regardless of genre. Insane.

I'm clearly old and out of touch, but I struggle with how someone can listen to the new Kendrick and think, "I like this. This is enjoyable."

Butterfly reminds me of when Andre did The Love Below with couple nice tracks but overall an artistic but eh album. No Schoolboy was also disappointing.

Still havent listed to Pimp a butterfly yet. got some traveling to do and will give it a go then. Overall reviews are great, but most hip hop the past few years have left me disappointed.

I don't get Kendrick Lamar. The only thing I know is white people love him.

It's impressive in a way, but critics mean nothing to me.

The only thing white people love more than Kendrick Lamar is telling other white people how much they love Kendrick Lamar.

I haven't listened to it, but the new Earl Sweatshirt album has an amazing title.

I love it sonically. Definitely seems to be of a mind with Flying Lotus and the whole Brainfeeder camp. Doesn't hurt having Thundercat involved. Still trying to wrap my head around Kendrick's part. I'm sure I'll overrate it just on the force of ambition, which I think hip-hop has been in short supply of for more than a bit. At the least, I'm glad it's put Young Garnier Fructis in the rearview.

In reality though, I've been going through the latest releases put out by Chicago's Numero label and that's been dominating my listening. Incredible anthologies of obscure soul, r&b and boogie, mostly focusing on particular midwestern scenes. Lovingly notated and painstakingly assembled.
