The whole top 40 sparkling pop production sound turns a lot of people off instantly and they aren't able to truly see the genius behind the songs. But when the style changes to something more 'relatable' I guess then people come around.
And honestly some of the cover versions really aren't good, but when the song you're covering is phenomenal (like blank space for example) you can just let it carry you.
Just for clarification, my remark on Swift wasn't my attempt at snobbery. I have grown to love a lot of pop music in my elder years... but for whatever reason, she's never really done it for me.
But I think your point is true in that, really well written songs can be played many different ways and still be good. In this case, they might make someone who wasn't crazy about the original material (me) and make me like it when coming from someone else. For me it's just the overwhelmingly raw melancholy that Adams brought to songs which use to have the glossy sheen of major pop production. I find myself falling in love with music where the "emotion" comes through to me. I always feel like that's such a douchey thing to say, the "emotion" of music, but that's the only way I know how to say it.
So Adams took a bunch of songs that didn't really move me in any meaningful way and put a certain feel that Swift couldn't. At least she didn't do that for me.
