I will never understand people who spend the whole brewers game in that bar by left field. They pay 30 bucks for a ticket and then go pay six dollar beers inside the bar.

From Don Walker

The Milwaukee Urban League announced Monday that it supports a downtown arena plan that is financed with both private and public funds.

Ralph Hollmon, the league's president and CEO, said the proposed arena could have a significant economic impact on the city, region and state.

In addition, Hollmon said, the Milwaukee Bucks "want to have significant minority hiring and contractor participation during construction of the arena." And the franchise, he said, is open to developing a so-called Community Benefits Agreement.

Under such an agreement, groups agree to ensure that minority and women-owned businesses participate during and after construction.

"The goal is to ensure that minority communities, as well as the broader community, benefit from the arena and its ancillary development," the league said in a statement.

"MUL understands that there are some in the community who feel that public funds should not be used for a new arena — especially when considering some of the challenges in our city, which includes high levels of poverty and unemployment, particularly among African-American males," Hollmon said.

But Hollmon said jobs are needed.

"In addition we need an environment where people will want to live and recreate in the city so we have a tax base to maintain essential services," he said.

Why wouldn't the contract just go to whoever comes in with the best bid and has the requisite experience to complete such a project?

I wonder how much liquid cash Attanasio has to invest... having him involved to some extent would be huge.

“I’ve reviewed a little bit (the arena funding situation),” he said. “My experience in looking at sports arenas - they go through a lot twists and turns, so if there’s something to do you want to pick the right spot.”

From the article above. This x 1,000. It's going to get done, but as we've witnessed already there will be bumps in the road.

So if the Brewers owner contributes say 50 million then were at a total of about 350 million. 250 from owners, 50 from city, 50 from Attanasio. I'd imagine the roughly 150 million left would come from the state in some way.

Good to hear literally everyone is on board with this. Would be shocked if it didn't get done at this point.

I have a hard time believing Attanasio would go anywhere near $50 million, despite what he says to the media.

If Attanasio "gives" money to build arena, he's expecting a return.

That's why LED haven't called him yet.

Yep. That article is totally overblown. Answering a direct question with "I'm always ready to help if asked" is different from "here is a proposal in which I will contribute funds with no expectation of a market return."

He's already struggling with Payroll for the Brewers so is he expected to take funds away from the roster to pitch in to the Bucks arena? http://www.bizjournals.com/milwaukee/bl ... rolls.html

But now won't lots of politicians and critics say "why do we have to put in any more? If Lasry and Edens won't cover it then the owner of the Brewer, who we already built a stadium for is willing to pitch in."

Because its called politics and this is a favor for a favor lol. This is to counter Common Ground and basically tell the new owners they have the "black community's"/inner city endorsement and they won't rail against this new arena at all. But in doing so the first people to get bids better be minority contractors and if not, not only will the Urban League make noise but they'll get all the north side aldermen to help them as well. So instead of support this is basically blackmail lol.

I've been lurking here for years, but I post maybe once a year or so. I am pretty well tuned into County politics, so I wanted to provide my perspective on what's been happening.

Assuming that the County will "donate" that Park East land to the project is wishful thinking. There are a few reasons for this. I think Abele would sign off on a "donation", but I believe he would need County board approval to do so. The relationship between Abele and the County Board is really, really bad. Just take a look at the number of Abele's vetoes that the Board has overridden in the past six months alone. It's bad enough that I have to wonder if it will be a blemish on the County's next bond rating audit. Second, there's a strong sentiment among Board members that the County shouldn't be giving away County assets, or at the least, selling them for less than market value -- again, take a look at some of the debate regarding the Transit Center and O'Donnell Park. I don't think Board members will want to "give away" a parcel of land that won't directly generate property tax revenue, even if ancillary development certainly has the potential to. If the Board and Abele can't make nice, this process may be strung out even longer.

I believe that, in the end, the Bucks will end up paying a reduced price for that land, with the promise of ancillary development. I suspect that the Bucks and their lobbyists are spending the lion's share of their time in Madison. The dynamic is Madison is less dysfunctional than at the City and County, plus the Bucks have some leverage if they can return to the City and County with the state's funding package in hand -- although, having concrete plans and renderings would certainly help their cause with all three bodies.

In the end, I unfortunately think this process will take a little longer then we're comfortable with, but it'll get done. I just want to see the Mayor take more initiative in championing this project.

Welcome to the party bucks2281.

Good insight and post.

It's good to hear Abele is working on this like I've heard he is, quietly, but I'm just as nervous about the push back as you are.

Part of the problem with the county is that next year the board becomes part time and the pay is slashed. There is a lot of bitterness and no incentive to get anything done. Many are looking for other offices to run for.
