This is related since it involves development around the area, in this case Lambeau. Starting out with high end hotel, brewpub, sports medcine clinic and a large public area/park with more to come. I'm anxious to see the Bucks plans but I imagine that's not for awhile. We still don't even have detailed arena plans (although they've been promised by month end)

I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Man, two huge development projects slated for two of Wisconsin's pro sports teams. This is awesome.

I'd say there's 1% chance of the new arena being done before the 2017 season.

They already picked local firms to work alongside the KC people. Don't let the local business people F this up. The plan looks great so far.

Bucks have spent more than anyone in WI lobbying in 2015.

Spend 400,000 dollars to get 250 mil in public funding. A no-brainer.

Just curious what everyone thinks of the fact that Walker basically cut $250 million from our Universities and gave $250 million to the Bradley Center on the same day.

It was not a simple diversion of 250mil from UW system to the Bucks.

Your question doesn't even make sense.

$250M didn't go to the Bradley Center.

The state only has $70M in the arena game right now while UW system lost funds due to their $600M surplus.

ESBF is right, but the optics are pretty terrible, especially here in Madison. I'm not nuts about public money going to a well-heeled private enterprise, but when you factor in the infrastructure improvements, the opportunity to breathe life into a moribund area and the potential domino effects of more development, I'm cautiously hopeful. 250M is 250M, but this is not the public giveaway that's happened elsewhere. Hell, it's a better deal than what happened in Green Bay for Lambeau. And I'd be first in line to pull the lever on Walker's testicular electrocution.

I'm curious what you think is considered a fact.

As for what I think you are asking, I think it sucks they cut 250M from the UW, but that doesn't have anything to do with the bucks. Considering the FACT that the budget would have a gap if the Bucks left, I would bet the future cuts would be even higher for the universities. Be thankful that the Bucks are still in state while bringing in national income to be taxed allowing for a more social services at the state level.

On Facebook I saw a meme showing Roger Goodell making $44M and the NFL stealing taxpayers money since they are a "non-profit." I find it so ironic people pushing for that money to go into education don't take the time to make educated statements about these issues. Instead, they go straight to the headline article. If you made the argument no taxpayer money should go to the stadium as a general principle... Fine, I disagree with it but at least it is a rational thought. Or that the state should've played hard ball with the Bucks and said, nope you only get $40M or some other offer. I agree with that and thought the Bucks created a false dichotomy.

It really is just intellectually dishonesty or just plain ignorance to write that Walker gave $250M to the Bucks straight from the UW budget.

Yeah, it's absurd. I despise Walker, but the financing of UW and the arena is totally different.

The arena will be funded through bond issues (i.e. new money/loans from bondholders), issued by the state ($55M), county ($55M), city ($47M), and WCD ($93M) (simplistic, I know). These bonds, when they mature, need to be paid back with interest. This means that bonds must generally be used on projects that generate revenue directly (or if the issuer finds some other new income with which to pay back, as in the case of the county).

And of the four bond-issuing entities, only the state would be interested in the UW system. WCD doesn't care about UW, and a state-funded school system is not a municipal responsibility.

In essence then, UW cuts, as far as I know, is to existing state funding. The Bucks arena is future bonding (loans). You could maybe argue that WI could've issued bonds to fund UW some more, but I don't know how it would've raised new money directly to pay the bondholders back. Jock tax revenue, however, is a direct effect of WI's issuance of bonds.

Madison is renowned as an educational community of merit. Shame to see such a valuable asset in promoting the future bled so callously.

lol

$250 million in one year vs $4 million in one year.

It's almost like you don't know what you're talking about.

Careful now, that phrase in bold that gets bounced around is almost as bad as the original posters statement.
