The Milwaukee Bucks just signed a player for $44 million, and the Bucks want us, the public, to pay for their new arena ("Henson gets $44 million deal," Oct. 3)? Have I missed something here? This makes no sense to me. Is there a politician out there who is willing to explain that one to me?

We laugh at people like Robert, but there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Wisconsin residents that feel similarly to him about this. To someone who is trying to pay for their living expenses, who is struggling to make ends meet, they don't get how three billionaires can ask the public to pay millions of dollars to buy a building for owners and then watch those same billionaires turn around and spend millions of dollars on their players. They see this as a big scheme, a big game that they're cut out of.

And, frankly, they are absolutely right about that. It IS a big scheme. Even proponents of the public contribution admit that is true. They see the public contribution as a sad consequence of wanting to keep a team they love.

But that doesn't make it right, or fair, or just, and there's nothing wrong with folks like Robert seeking an explanation.

It's been remarkably quiet on the new arena front. Any news we've missed? Could new renderings be released to coincide with the start of the season?

Nov 7th there's a tailgate party before the Nets game.

This could also be the groundbreaking ceremony.

Hadn't heard about this at all. Thanks.

You would think they are holding new renderings to unveil at the groundbreaking.

Interesting. They got stuck in the upper level. I imagine they have the option to get into the new arena. Never been a big fan of their burgers though.

Really, it's amazing that we would pay 1/2 the cost of a building and we still have no idea what it looks like.

I want to see the renderings not just for that reason, though. I want to be excited about what they're going to do. It's disappointing to me that they haven't given us that yet.

The delay is a sign they are leaving no stone unturned with regard to detail. If it means a better building, the wait will be worth it. I won't hold the delay against them unless the unveiled building is a disappointment.

I don't think fans will be disappointed. Expect lots of awesomeness.

The design will have to be approved by the city and I expect a lot of pontification from the council before it gets approved. Given the extremely tight timeframe we have in order to get this done in 2 years I'd like to see things get rolling because every day that goes by without a shovel in the ground increases the chances we have to wait 3 years. I know there is paperwork to be done with the permits and with the financing but that shouldn't preclude the design phase from being completed and approved.

I would guess the 4th St. issue is a big holdup in the Bucks releasing renderings. They have submit designs to the city. City needs to approve them. They don't want to close 4th St. Bucks do. I don't think the Bucks would want to release renderings including a closed 4th St, get people excited about that, only to have to re-release renderings without a closed 4th in a rendering that is not as exciting as the ones with a closed st.

I'm thinking they are doing this tailgate on Nov 7th for a trial run closed 4th St to show the city what it could be like.

It's my understanding there was an agreement made on 4th street and that Bauman supported it. It was an amendment by Milele Coggs. The street will be closed as the Bucks wanted and turned into a public plaza. If the Bucks ever stop using that plaza it would revert back to the city.

The first two things to go out will be the arena itself and the parking garage, I think those 2 are in place as to where they will go.

Correct.

That was very last minute. Came to light during September 22nd Common Council session in which the final 12-3 passage of the city portion occurred

well right but you don't want to piecemeal the design, you want everything to flow into each other

That's true and that will be a challenge since not everything will be built at once. This is a 10 year project. It will be interesting to see the timeline for the entire development. I think there will be some companies that will jump on board right away and be a part of "phase 1" of the ancillary development and some that will take a wait and see approach before committing to being a part of future phases.
