My Offseason Plan (#352): Blow It Up

Post#1 » by bango_the_buck » Thu May 15, 2008 9:01 am

Step 1: Win the lottery and draft Rose... Hey, I can dream can't I? With the 37th pick, take his teammate, Dorsey (that is, if he's still available).

Step 2: Complete a 4-team trade with Miami, Phoenix, and New York (I know, its unlikely, but I think its pretty fair overall.)

Bucks trade: Redd, Mo, Simmons, Gadz, CV
Bucks get: Marion, Haslem, Marbury (buyout)

Knicks trade: Curry, Marbury, 2nd
Knicks get: Diaw, Barbosa, Simmons, Gadz

Heat trade: Marion, Haslem
Heat get: Mo, CV, Curry

Suns trade: Diaw, Barbosa
Suns get: Redd, 2nd

We get rid of all of our bad contracts and add two nice pieces in Marion and Haslem.

NY gets rid of Marbury and Curry and replace them with D'Antoni favorites Barbosa and Diaw. Gadz would be a much better fit than Curry in their new up-tempo system.

Marion wants a new contract extension and if the Heat run into snags in the negotiations, they may be open to trading him. They obviously like Mo and desperately need an upgrade at the center position. And CV would replace much of Marion's production (though obviously not his defense).

There was a report that Diaw and Barbosa had fallen out of favor with Phoenix management, so they could be on the block. The Suns really need another goto scorer and Redd would provide that. With Shaq and Amare inside and Nash running the show, Redd's outside game maybe just what they need to put them over the top.

Step 3: Sign Sasha Vujacic from the Lakers as a free agent. I've always liked his game - good perimeter defender, passer, and outside shooter. He's young and should come cheap.

That would give us a lineup of:

Bogut/Dorsey
Yi/Haslem
Marion/Mason
Vujacic/Bell
Rose/Sessions

I think it's a nice mix of youth/veterans and offense/defense. Thoughts?

I do think Marion will be available if the Heat get Beasley. I'd even bet Marion is more "available" then Haslem.

I still also see the possibility of Marion opting out and getting a big contract offer (4-years/$60mm) from the Sixers.

And here's my 'go young' route. I think I like it even better:

Step 1. Same.

Step 2. Complete 3-team trade with Portland and Cleveland.

Bucks trade: Redd, Mo, Simmons, Gadz
Bucks get: Varejao, Fernandez, #13 (Batum), Szczerbiak, LaFrentz, Snow

Blazers trade: Fernandez, LaFrentz, #13
Blazers get: Mo, Gadz, #19

Cavs trade: Varejao, Szczerbiak, Snow, #19
Cavs get: Redd, Simmons

Rose/Sessions/Snow
Fernandez/Bell/Szczerbiak
Batum/Ersan/Mason
Yi/CV/Dorsey
Bogut/Varejao/LaFrentz

That first plan is completely unrealistic.

...and the second isn't terribly appealing. even less so if we don't get rose.

i do like your first idea and while it does seem unattainable, all you have to do is think back to last year when the celtics turned their mess into one of the league's best literally overnight.
