Trading when over the cap??

Post#1 » by tedbrogen » Mon Jun 23, 2008 6:57 pm

So, I feel I somewhat grasp the rules for trades when a team is over the salary cap or the trade would put them over the salary cap.

I know a team can't take back more than 125% of the salaries they trade away, plus $100,000. However, I couldn't find anywhere online that would clarify what they use for a player's "salary".
Is it the average salary of their current contract?
Is it the salary for the current or upcoming season?
Is it the average salary for the years remaining on the contract?
If its based on some sort of average, do they include options years?

I had been under the assumption it was the salary for the current, or in the case of the offseason, the upcoming season.

Let's take Mike Redd for example. He signed a 6 year $91M deal.
Would he be considered a $15.16M player (his average salary including the option year),
or a $14.54M player (his average salary without the option year),
or a $17.04M player (the average remaining annual salary including his option year),
or a $16.41M player (the average remaining annual salary with his option year),
or a $15.78M player (his salary for 08/09) ???

Its the yearly salary he makes at the time of the trade.

Excellent good to hear. Tell him hello from the Boards!

I have faith that both you and fam can handle it, just noticed GAD wasn't around and was hoping everything was well with him.

Yeah he is fine. He has just been super busy and well ya know its baseball season and the off-season around here. I usually don't post here unless I get info to post. It just gets to random and crazy with idiotic threads during the off-season. As KIAM and myself were discussing earlier, I wish natural selection took care of some of the threads and thoughts on here. Unfortunately it hasn't :D

GAD is alive and well....

Understandable, and I can't disagree with you.. some of the threads are a bit much. At certain parts of the season I also decrease the amount that I post because things go a little too far and I don't want to deal with it, so I certainly undersand.

Usually some of the trade Bucks player X for garbage player A, garbage player B, and cash annoys me..don't let it get to you!

Thanks. That's what I had thought.
