OT: Monta Ellis Injury

Post#1 » by zmanishere11 » Sun Sep 7, 2008 10:49 pm

Pretty sad story here. He clearly lied about his injury, but what a lot of people aren't talking about is it very well could be career ending. Rumor is it may have happened on his new Ducati motorcycle.

It'll be interesting to see what GS does with his contract. As I understand, if it happened on a motorcycle they can void the entire thing if they want.

The W's can void the deal and write up a new one...It should happen in the next few days, according to reports in the Bay Area...They could go with team options and incentives to protect the team..If it's a small deal, they could negotiate in a player option for Monta...

This is an enormous mistake. Ellis hasn't really earned any money yet, and now his entire contract could be voided. Wow.

Yeah I can't really feel sorry for him. If someone were to hand me a 66m contract and have in it some stipulations such as a no dangerous sports clause, I think I could make that sacrifice...

Yeah, but you're not a spoiled rotten pampered professional athlete either.

There is a reason teams put this stuff in their contracts. Wasn't Jason Williams reason enough to just wait to ride a motorcycle? It sucks for both parties, but it's no one's fault other than Monta's.

The Warriors absolutely ought to void Ellis' contract. It would be insanity to honor that deal when Ellis went out and did this, putting his ability to perform in question.

As I understand it, if the Warriors this it would make Ellis an unrestricted free agent. Maybe they could work out a fair replacement contract (shorter and lower dollars per year to reflect the risk) before the voiding, so that the voiding and new contract signing occur more or less simultaneously. That seems like the right thing to do for both parties.

exactly. It's one thing to have faith in Ellis- and hopefully hes comes back healthy and productive- but if they honor the contract and he's lost his step and averages 8ppg or something, they are screwed.

I feel like we're about to see the most incentive-laden contract in the history of the league.
