I would actually consider Camby a flashy player. He definitely had flashy defensive numbers.

Malone was a beast, simply unstoppable on offence, and for many years, not just 3 or 4 seasons like others PF (Amare Stoudamire or Shawn Kemp, for instance). Garnett, with all his tricks, height, wingspan and athleticism, was the best defender out of that trio. But I would pick Duncan for my team; he never won the DPY trophy, it was his former pal David Robinson who did it, but he was so good on both zones and so team-oriented that he would be my choice by a mile.

Thanks for sharing that article. I sure hope Rubio makes a speedy recovering. I am looking forward to seeing him out on the court, when he is able to return and play ball again.

I suppose he could be better than Nash simply cause he'll impact both sides of the ball. It's hard not to think he could at least be in Nash's ballpark on offense, but defensively, he should have quite the decided advantage in that category when all is said and done.

After reading that, I have to say that I'm glad the author is scouting for an "opposing team" and not the Wolves. That report was terrible.

Yeah, for a guy who is supposed to know basketball and the opponent, he doesn't seem to have actually watched the Wolves play.

It turns out there was more to the Brandon Roy package than his dear friend, point guard Will Conroy.

A league source said longtime Seattle-based NBA consultant Steve "Hat Man" Gordon is now on the Minnesota Timberwolves' payroll as a scout. He has worked out Roy and Conroy for years.

Generally, when a team brings in a new talent evaluator who on the surface has very little say in personnel moves, the reaction is met with a collective yawn.

But this case could eventually be different for a couple reasons:

1. Gordon wielded lots of power while an employee for the Blazers. In fact, multiple reports said he was incredibly tight with owner Paul Allen and was partly responsible for the firing of general manager Kevin Pritchard and assistant general manager Tom Penn. Presumably, Gordon is still close with Allen. Considering the Wolves' issues with the Blazers -- the Nic Batum fallout and the Martell Webster compensation claim -- does it make sense to have an Allen confidant on the payroll?

2. Gordon has a good relationship with free-agent center Greg Oden. Mike Conley Sr., Oden's agent, told me over the summer that his client wasn't expected to play this year but is expected back for the 2013-14 season. Assuming his knees don't break down again -- he has had three microfracture surgeries in the last five years -- Oden will likely be on the Wolves' radar and they could have the inside track to getting him because of Gordon.

• A source close to Conroy is convinced he'll stick on the opening night roster because of his $100,000 guarantee. Conroy will become expendable when point guard Ricky Rubio is back in December.

• There has been no dialogue between the Wolves and wing Chase Budinger's camp about a contract extension. Budinger will be an unrestricted free agent next summer.

And that's about the end of it. At a certain point, an injury is an injury and a missing star is a real detriment, and that's where the Timberwolves stand. They can't dwell, though, and if Wednesday's game against Detroit is any indication, they're not. It's up to Rick Adelman to spin magic out of terrible luck, and he's done it before. The season is a week away, and this month without Love still has the potential to be the obstacle upon which the Timberwolves build their season. The odds are stacked against them, but since when is that not the case?

What must be different this year is that the team needs to learn rather than wallow, and with a supporting cast that seems infinitely more invested than last year, there's a real chance of perfectly tolerable basketball without Love. It just might not be quite as fun.

It is decent (except for a few things, like calling Kirilenko our 6th man), it's just something that any internet rube who has watched half a quarter of Wolves' preseason basketball could have written. If they're going to hype up the author as a "rival scout," then the article should have a little bit of depth. As it is, I'm not sure that anyone on this board couldn't have written a better scouting report on the team,

6th man thing I overlooked.

I agree there really wasn't anything really insightful, but its good for fans of other teams who want a brief summary. TBH, I didn't expect too much advanced stats from an SI article, but the "rival scout" didn't add anything except perhaps legitimacy.

Yeah, not very insightful. I would think a professional scout would know something about Shved. I mean he just played in the Olympics and was pursued by multiple teams. Then again, a scout probably isn't going to spill everything he knows to SI.
