the Blazers have every intention of re-signing Batum. of course, they haven't seen what offers he gets yet

But the important thing to keep in mind is that Portland wants cap-space this summer and Batum's 5 million dollar cap-hold as a RFA will be significantly less then what his new salary will be. So it made sense not to extend his rookie deal this season

your trade is a non-starter for the Blazers. They'd have little interest in Beasley, and no interest at all in trading Batum.

As far as the rumored deal, as a Blazer fan, I'm betting (hoping) that if the Lakers continue to insist on Portland taking Blake, the deal is DOA

Just because you're a RFA, doesn't mean it doesn't count on the cap. Only good thing about RFA is that you can match any offer a team makes to them or offer them a good contract even if you didn't have a lot of cap room. (If the owner is willing to pay luxury tax.)

So if a team offers Batum a contract (and he accpets) on day 1 of free agency, the Blazers would have 3 days to match. If they match he would then count against their cap at the new rate. So their "extra" cap space only exists as long as Batum is unsigned + 3 days.

Of course it counts against the cap space. But the Blazers have his rights. They don't need to clear space to resign their own players when they have his rights.

The extra cap space only becomes actual cap space if you waive Batums rights, but then at the same time you could not sign him to a contract that could potentially put you over the cap.
