$6.3M TRADE EXCEPTION, what does it mean?

Post#1 » by MaxMN » Sat Aug 23, 2014 5:09 pm

I don't completely understand trade exceptions, what does this mean exactly?

Do you think it means more moves for the Wolves?

Essentially, they could trade for a player worth up to 6.3m without sending out any salary.

Most trade exceptions don't get used, though.

Do we have any cap space? We still have to unload JJ and Bud!

Currently, our player salaries put us $6,766,688 over the salary cap.

Then we can trade JJ, Bud & trade exception for a star player in a team that needs cap space this season or the next :P

You can't combine the trade exception with another player. You can, however, trade a player for a player and the trade exception for a separate player at the same time.

Correct. We are still almost $7m below the luxury tax line, with a full roster. No concerns there.

Can you trade the exception for a future 1st round pick?

Nope.

Also, here is something for everyone to keep in mind: since we used part of the MLE to sign Mo Williams, we are committing to being an over-the-cap team for this season. That doesn't mean we can't go under the salary cap, but it means we cannot sign a player using cap space until next season. Fortunately, I don't see any way we end up with a bunch of cap to sign anyone worthwhile, and there aren't really any prize FAs left anyway.

Is the general opinion here just to get rid of JJ barea? Like get rid of him for 2nd round draft picks, or is there hope he's worth more? Or just get him off the squad?

As an expiring he should be worth more. We may have to hold on till the trade deadline to get what we should for him.

Pretty sure that the Wolves could use it to absorb a player in a salary dump and could receive a pick at the same time as payment though.

OJ Mayo is one of the best defenders in the league, hes a two way player and hes a great passer and playmaker.

Either pair him up with a wing to match salary/value in a trade or maybe send him over to Lakers for their 2nd round pick?
