How do you see the minutes be distributed ?

Post#1 » by Merc_Porto » Tue Jun 30, 2015 3:41 pm

Assuming a roster like this:

*Bennett out.
*Pek injured

Rubio / Jones / Brown
Martin / Lavine / Budinger
Wiggins / Shabazz / Hummell
Garnett / Bjelica / Payne
Towns / Dieng / Pek

I´lll try a scenario:

Rubio (34) Jones (14)
Martin (28) Lavine (20)
Wiggins (36) Shabazz (12)
Garnett (18) Bjelica (18) Shabazz (8) Towns (4)
Towns (28) Dieng (20)

The decisions always depends from game to game, but with everybody healthy (except Pekovic) How do you see the minutes distribution ?

Is that enough minutes for Shabazz ? Lavine ?

What you think...

Between Bjelica and Towns, I struggle to see Shabazz play much at PF at all.

I think Martin will be injured for stretches and will open up more minutes for Lavine and Shabazz.

I think KG will average 12-15 minutes.

I would roll ten deep with,

Rubio/Jones
LaVaine/Martin
Wiggins/Muhammad
KG/Bjelica
Towns/Pek

and would set out KG on back to backs and give his minutes to Dieng and Payne plus we all know Pek is going to get hurt again and those minutes will go to Dieng so he wont be just rotting away on the bench.

I like the idea of starting a vet in the starting five in KG for defense and to actually help on court with Towns and then having a vet in Martin leading the bench with his scoring power.

I'd be pretty sad if Lavine only had 18 minutes per game. That's about 4ish minutes per quarter. Maybe I just expect too much out of Lavine.

I won't post exact numbers, but here is how I see it:

30+ min
Wiggins (Main guy, offense runs through him)
Ricky (Maestro, runs the show)

These two guys being healthy throughout the year is what will bring us team success. with one of them out, there's really no way we can compete in the West

High 20s
Towns(Starting C + occasional PF minutes)
Dieng (Backup C + occasional PF minutes)

Mid to low 20s
Martin
Lavine
Bazz
Bjelica

10-19mpg
KG
Payne
Tyus

<10mpg-DNP
Bud
Brown
Bennett
Payne

Ricky/Tyus
Martin/Lavine/Bazz
Wiggins/Bazz
KG/BJ/Payne
Towns/Dieng

Yeah, it's just tough getting Lavine and Shabazz regular 20+ minutes with Martin and Wiggins ahead of them. Reality is Martin will miss some games an KG won't play as many minutes and games as we want so minutes will be freed up for Zach and Bazz, though.

Too many variables right now to speculate.

Peks health, will Martin be traded, how many minutes/games will Garnett make/possible FA signings/Bjelica kept?

I kinda hope no ones playing over 30 minutes a game. I'm not sure how realistic that is but NBA now seems to be more about surviving the season than going hard for all 82 games. With Tyus I hope we can keep Rubio around 30 or maybe even lower but again not sure that's realistic based on "how things are done".

Rubio (31)/Jones (14)/Lavine (3)
Martin (26)/Lavine (22)
Wiggins (33)/Bazz (15)
KG (16)/Bjelica (20)/Bazz (9)/Towns (3)
Towns (26)/Dieng (22)

Payne/Bud/Bennett/Pek-DNP and Injury replacements.

I want Rubio-LaVine-Wiggins-KG(or Bazz)-Towns to finish games.

The great thing about this team is that we have a number of different lineups we can put out there depending on how we need to play against a certain team.

-Need defense? Play Wiggins, Garnett, Towns in the frontcourt
-Need spacing and ball movement? Put Bjelica out there at PF.
-Need to be physical? Sub in Muhammad and Pekovic.

What you think...

I think your first assumption is flawed, because I don't see any takers for Bennett.

Regarding the minutes, I think KG may average closer to 12 minutes per game, since there will be plenty where he doesn't suit up at all (b2b, short road trips) and some games he plays 24. With that in mind you may actually be better off bringing him off the bench. That way your starters are the same (barring injury) and you don't have the backup PF constantly rotating between bench and starting 5. I think that would be bad for his morale and team spirit.

Also don't forget Flip's mancrush Hummel.

I think it will be more like

Rubio (32) Jones (12) Lavine (4)
Martin (24) Lavine (16) Wiggins (8)
Wiggins (24) Shabazz (12) Bjelica (6) Hummel (4)
Towns (20) Payne (12) Shabazz (8) Bjelica (8)
Dieng (28) Garnett (10) Towns (8) Bennett (2)

I also think Towns will start the season as PF. I don't think you want to throw him against the Gasols, Cousins and Jordans too soon.

Part of me wonders if you could do a platoon system between Garnett and Pekovic.

Games that Garnett plays, Pekovic sits.
Games that Pekovic plays, Garnett sits.

Both of them should be getting about 15-20 minutes per game anyways, so it wouldn't really affect the rest of the rotation. Either one of them could start the game next to Towns, so the starters wouldn't need to be changed either.

Rubio / Jones / LaVine
Martin / LaVine / Wiggins
Wiggins / Muhammad / Hummel / Budinger
KG or KAT / Bjelica / Bennett
KAT or Pek / Dieng
Inactive: KG or Pek, Payne (NBDL)
Cut: Brown

KG or KAT

Jones
LaVine
Muhammad
Bjelica
Dieng

Hummel
Bennett
Budinger

Is Towns coming off the bench? Anyone here think KG would be better with the 2nd unit?

KG and Towns will likely both be starting.

I don't see Garnett only playing 10 minutes per game.
How is that going to work ?

5 minutes in the 1st quarter, 5 minutes in the 3rd ?

Call me optimistic, but whilst I agree that KG will sit most b2b games (although not all IMO), I suspect he'll play around 25 minutes in the games he's fit for.

I'm pretty sure he could have come back and played a bit of last season if we were anywhere near play-off contention and I feel that we took the opportunity to give him a decent rest before heading into a season where his contributions will make a big difference to a team that isn't committed to a tank.
