LAC/Minny

Post#1 » by The Penguin » Thu Jun 19, 2008 1:07 am

Would you guys do something like #3, A. Walker, R. McCants for Kaman & #7 ?

I figured it gives Minny two established bigs in Jefferson & Kaman and they will still probably be able to draft Love or Lopez at #7, giving them a solid young core of bigs. Thoughts?

I do that trade on nba 2k8 sometimes. So yes I would do it. I would also do it for the Wolves future pick back in place of the 7th.

I think I would. Doubt the Clips do it though. Take Gordon at #7, he is basically the same as McCants. Strong but short 2 that can shoot the 3. Kaman is pretty much a low block center though. There may not be enough room for him and Al. Guess I wouldn't mind finding out. Unless of course Beasley is there.

I thought LA might do it for Mayo. He's pretty much the biggest draw they could hope to obtain short of someone like Melo, and while I think they give up a lot, they are the Clippers so you never really know what they will do. Livingston & Mayo would compliment each other well, but it would leave them with a hole at the 5.

If the Bogut rumors are true, I'd rather do #3 + filler for #8 + Bogut. That way we can still keep McCants. I doubt we would ship McCants off to the Bucks with Redd being there. They have enough shooters.

This deal provides incentive to trade Mayo (or Beasley) that most LAC deals do not so I give you lots of credit. I'm on the fence, so it must be pretty fair. I agree that Mayo would not only fill a position of need (Clips didn't make a qualifying offer for Livingston), but he'd make them a lot of money in ticket sales and merchandising.

Trade wouldn't work. Kaman is BYC.

At least it wouldn't on draft night. Can someone clarify the BYC rule? Will Kaman's BYC status come off the books on July 1?

Kaman's BYC comes off June 30th, after which the trade would have to officially happen.

I like Kaman more than Bogut, so I would definitely do this. I'd want Alexander or Gordon at 7 though, not a big.

I never really knew how that worked

Base year compensation

Certain players in the first few months of a new contract are subject to base year compensation (BYC). The intent of BYC is to prevent teams from re-signing players to salaries specifically targeted to match other salaries in a trade (in other words, salary should be based on basketball value, not trade value). A BYC player's trade value as outgoing salary is 50% of his new salary, or his previous salary, whichever is greater. BYC applies only to players who re-sign with their previous team and receive a raise greater than 20%. It also applies only when (and as long as) the team is over the salary cap.

Taken from wikipedia so hopefully this is accurate

There is a lot of buzz about LAC and Sea. Likely one of those will be our trading partner. Same rules applies like last time. We will need a "young starter" plus the draft pick. But from all we are hearing about those 2 teams right now it will be a fun draft.

Let me try.

When a player gets a big raise (which often happens when they come off their rookie contract), they become a BYC player. If their team tries to trade them for one year after they sign the deal, their outgoing salary is considered half, which makes it tough to salary match both sides of a deal under the CBA (where a team can't add more than 25% + $100,000)

Maybe it'll be easier to understand as an example.

Kaman was on a rookie deal last year, and got an $8.6 mil contract for 2007-08 and became BYC.

We say, "Hey, we'll trade you Walker for Kaman" and after a few drinks, they agree.

The NBA nixes the trade.

The deal works for us: We send out $9 mil in Walker, and take back $8.6 in Kaman, so we didn't add more than 25% + $100,000. That's fine.

However, since Kaman's BYC, the deal for them looks like they send out $4.3 mil (half of Kaman's $8.6) and they take in $9 mil of Walker. This means they added $5.7 mil, which is more than 125% + $100,000, and the NBA says, "No way, guys!"

If you're following, it may look like BYC players never get traded, because the teams can't balance both sides. However, BYC players do get traded, but it generally needs to be done by adding salary to both sides of the deal. For example, Kaman $8.6 + Mobely $8.9 for Walker $9.0 + Jaric $6.6 works fine.

We send out 15.6 and take back $17.5, so we didn't add 125% + $100,000.
They send out $13.2 and take back $15.6. They didn't add 125% + $100,000, so it works for them too.

Does that make sense?

FYI for everyone on Kaman ..

While Kaman signed his contract extension in Oct of 2006, he loses the BYC status when players go on next year's salaries, which I believe is July 1st. He will be paid $9.5 mil for the 2008-09 season, the second of the five year extension.

2008-09....9,500,000
2009-10..10,400,000
2010-11..11,300,000
2011-12..12,200,000

But dodge one obstacle and another appears. Kaman has a healthy 15% trade kicker in his deal.

shrink your the man...byc makes sense to me know.

I like Kaman, but not the original deal (regardless of byc status). I don't think McCants needs to be included.

If they could pull off pick #3 and Walker for #7 and Kaman they should do it...

This would allow the T-Wolves to take a PG at #7...preferably Augustin.

The starting 5 of Augustin, Foye, Brewer, Al and Kaman would be fun to grow with in the next several years!

You'd also have to try and pry the pick we owe the clippers back also.

But I doubt LAC will deal away their franchise center(whos on of the best centers in the game), are in major losing Elton Brand to signing, trading whatever.

Completely decapitating their front court would be a dumb move by LA. Theyve got a talented team as we saw 2 years ago. I doubt theyll gut it out for Mayo.

I don't see any way they'd take DJ at 7. I think they'd keep Foye at point and take a scorer on the wing. (preferred) or draft Lopez or Love to bring off the bench (not preferred, although that'd be a pretty sick big man rotation).

The pick back has less value than the Mia pick we own next year. The production is solid on it. I am not worried about it.

My gut feeling is Miami and Lac make a deal. Pat only has a couple years left and I could see Brand being a part of their team.
