2008 Free Agency game

Post#1 » by dunkonu21 » Tue Jul 1, 2008 5:34 pm

As of now our depth chart looks like this:

Foye
Brewer/McCants
Miller
Love/Richard/Cardinal/Madsen
Jefferson/Collins

Now I know most people expect two or three of these guys to be back: Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Craig Smith or Kirk Snyder.

If any of those guys try and get tricky and ask for a lot of money, I would say let them all go.

Do your own REALISTIC scenario of if all our guys (Gomes, Bassy, Cookie and Snyder) ask for too much money.

Here are some other options for this year. I will list major guys, but it's very unlikely we're gonna make any huge noise in free agency.

*=restricted

PG:
Darrell Armstrong (Too old and breakable)
Carlos Arroyo (Had some attitude problems in Orl)
Jose Juan Barea* (VERY, VERY short)
Earl Boykins (Thinks he's way better than he is, also look above at Mr. Barea)
Jose Calderon (Way too expensive, Toronto will wrap him up)
Sam Cassell (Not going there again)
Anthony Carter (I would love him as a back-up)
Dan Dickau (Not sure he's talented enough)
Keyon Dooling (great defender, his ball handling may be a problem)
Chris Duhon (would be a good option, but might ask for MLE or around that)
Daniel Gibson* (Would love to add him at a reasonable price)
Royal Ivey (Meh)
Anthony Johnson (He's pretty good, but his game is boring)
Shaun Livingston (Injured, very risky to have him as main back-up)
Tyronn Lue (Good shooter, passionate, I'd be down with him)
Flip Murray (Something about him doesn't fit, not a natural PG)
Jannero Pargo (Great shooter, but not a great PG)
Smush Parker (Very athletic, and...uh....that's about it)
Chris Quinn* (Overrated)
Damon Stoudamire (Gonna go to a contender)
Beno Udrih (We f'd up once I doubt McHale would admit his mistake)
Delonte West* (Restricted, he'll be back in Clev)
Jason Williams (Ricky Davis syndrome)
Louis Williams* (Would be a great signing, Philly prolly wouldn't allow it.

I'll take Louis Williams, Anthony Carter, or Keyon Dooling in that order. Most likely of all of them to me is Carter. I can't be too cheap so I'm going to sign Louis Williams and take a flier on Livingston

SG/SF:
We're pretty good at this position would you not agree?

Brew, McCants and Miller are going to eat A LOT of minutes. I could see the Wolves signing Gerald Green back though. Other really cheap, potentially good players not named Gomes are; Demetris Nichols and Antoine Wright. I would like to see Green back though and i'll sign Nichols too.

PF:
Ryan Bowen (He's a bit redundant with Cardinal)
Elton Brand (We have a great shot of signing him)
Andre Brown (Don't know much about him)
Paul Davis (Good shooter)
Herbert Hill (I think he's undersized like Cookie)
Walter Herrmann (Would be great to sign, a cheaper version of Gomes)
Robert Horry (Impossible)
Dwayne Jones (Good shot blocker)
Carl Landry (Gonna get paid)
Sean Marks (Some skill, but not a rotation player)
DJ Mbenga (Big body, I wouldn't mind it)
Randolph Morris* (Would love him, wonder how much Knicks like him)
Scot Pollard (Meh)
Shavlik Randolph (See Pollard)
Brian Skinner (Cardinal>Skinner)
Ronny Turiaf* (Lakers won't let Kobe's buddy leave)

Randolph Morris, Herrmann, Dwayne Jones and Mbenga in that order. Herrmann is best fit to me and a good cheap option.

C:
Earl Barron (Very tall and I believe he is pretty athletic, He'd be a nice fit with some potential)
Andris Biedrins* (Only 21, it'd be the end of our 2010 hopes tho)
Primoz Brezec (I said I wanted him a couple months ago and I still do)
Kwame Brown (I have a feeling someone will overpay)
P.J. Brown (Contender)
DeSagana Diop (Some of us want him, but he's gonna be a bad contract in a couple years, no thanks)
Francisco Elson (He wishes KG would touch his nuts, that's the closest he'll get to greatness. F him)
Adonal Foyle (Too ugly, lol)
Nenad Krstic* (He'll be re-signed or overpaid)
Jamaal Magloire (No passion or effort)
Alonzo Mourning (0% chance)
Dikembe Mutombo (Contender)
Patrick O'Bryant (Great fit obviously)
Emeka Okafor* (Too bad he isn't a FA in 2010)
Theo Ratliff (We treated him well, but I still doubt it)
Robert Swift* (Would love to Steve Hutchinson him from seattle)
Kurt Thomas (Contender)
Jake Voskuhl (Not good)
Lorenzen Wright (Not worth 5 million a year for us)

Swift, Brezec, POB, Barron or Kwame in that order. Stealing the restricted Swift from the Sonics is a pipe dream. I'll take Brezec.

So in my game where we can't sign any of our free agents the line up for me is:
Foye/Louis Willaims/Livingston
Brewer/McCants/Nochols
Miller/GG$/Cardinal
Love/Herrmann/Madsen
Jefferson/Brezec/Collins

If we lose out on Bassy I bet we got vet pg with 3pt range.

If we sign a center it will be an overpay. Sad enough that is the case. Unless it was a flyer like POB. Otherwise i really do not support giving a fat contract to a center. Play Al and Love at the 4/5 for most the minutes.

Did you just use "Steve Hutchinson" as a verb? Very nice!

So the game is no Woofie free agents, fill in the gaps on this roster -

Foye
Brewer/McCants
Miller
Love/Richard/Cardinal/Madsen
Jefferson/Collins

Chris Duhon would be my first target... he's a pure point and a good enough shooter to complement Jefferson and Love on the block.

I personally think Gomes is a mortal lock to come back and play the 3/4 BUT... without Gomes I'd make an offer to RFA Josh Childress. Perfect fit behind/alongside Miller, Brewer and McCants.

Other than that, it would be minimum salary guys to fill out the roster.

Interesting game. I would probably not even try for a restricted FA as that can often be a drawn out process waiting for the team to match while we lose out on our next group of options.

PG (sign 2) in order:
Chris Duhon
Shaun Livingston(risky pick and only if he came uber cheap)
Keyon Dooling
Anthony Johnson
Jannero Pargo
Dan Dickau
Smush Parker
Tyronn Lue
Jason Williams
Anthony Carter
Earl Boykins

SG/SF: We're probably alright there, but I'd float an offer to JR Smith or Pietrus

PF:
With Al, Love, and Madsen, and even Cardinal, I wouldn't even look at another PF.

C:
DeSagana Diop (Dallas will overpay him)
Patrick O'Bryant (worth a cheap flier)
Primoz Brezec (doesn't excite me, but could be decent)
Kwame Brown (warm body)
Adonal Foyle (see Kwame)

I wouldn't mind taking a chance with Livingston if he comes cheap enough since he was a quality PG before he got hurt (send him part of the MLE) and then bring back gomes and either keep neitzel if he does good in summer league or bring in a veteran PG for league minimum to be our 3rd string and insurance for Livingston.

I don't think we really need another big but if we do, then I'd be all for POB and give him a chance.
