Maggette for Collins + Craig Smith?

Post#1 » by shrink » Thu Jan 1, 2009 4:50 pm

I thought I'd drag this over from the Trade Board for discussion.

St.Nick wrote: But according to Yahoo there are three NBA executives who confirm that Maggette is being pushed hard in trade talks by the Warriors.

I could see him being dealt to:

Chicago: for Nocioni
Toronto: with CJ Watson for Bargnani, Joey Graham, and Jamario Moon
Minnesota: with Demarcus Nelson for Jason Collins and Craig Smith

Anything you like in there? Or what else could you propose?

Corey Maggette
29 years old
6' 6" 225 lb
19.1 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 1.8 APG

2008-09 $8,275,862
2009-10 $8,937,931
2010-11 $9,600,000
2011-12 $10,262,069
2012-13 $10,924,138

No, no no no nononononoooo. I live in LA so i watched Mags as a Clip and a Dub. He is crazy selfish on a bad contract. His skill set is great. But his age, contract and selfishness make me shudder.

I would be tempted to do it. We NEED a second scorer. Getting him would take the pressure off our other guys who are trying to be a second option, which is something they are not used to. I understand his contract is long and he might not have the greatest personality, but I would give it a look. Smith has been decent, but he won't get much better. He is what he is and thats it. We need more.

Maggette and Miller would be broken so many times throughout the seasons that they would have to ride a team ambulance to and from all the games. We don't need anymore of our major players turning into glass. Maggette has some great skills but he is all wrong for us.

I also take issue with the fact that this takes us out as major players in the 09 FA. As seemingly everyone here's favorite Marvin Williams plays the same position as Mags and Boozer plays the position we are the most stacked. And this trade does nothing to really help our 2010 FA chances so its just all bad for me.

Another overpriced mid-tier player that would make the Wolves nominally better than they are now and only for a very short amount of time. There is next to no long term benefits for this deal. Think long term. Pass.

I wonder if there's a less risky\long term commitment for a guy who can get to the line as much as Mags. That's really what this team needs scoring wise. I guess in hindsight I might not do this. he brings an aspect we need, but when I think of it more is he that much better than gomes overall? I'm not even a gomes fan, he's a good all round player though.

I pass.

I am against a trade that harms cap for 09 and 10 until we have a new gm who can do what he wants.

mags is gifted and would have been great next to kg but he is not the character and contract we need on this team now.

can't afford to commit to more starters that don't play defense. Maybe if it was somebody who's offense was so unbelievable that it compensated like Carmelo, but Maggette isn't there

by trading for Maggette we're committed to Love/Jefferson/Maggette undersized no defense frontcourt. I think we need to get a tall, athletic, defensive SF like AK47 or Gerald Wallace.

Has Maggette ever been on a winning team? He puts up stats but at the team's expense. He reminds me of Ricky Davis. That alone makes me say no to this trade.

ak47 is a big reason utah can get away with okur and boozer. we need a similar rebounding and defensive wing.

we claim to model san an and that might be true but looking at what makes utah successful might have more value.

skilled offensive bigs that compliment. disciplinary head coach. et etc...

say no to maggs. there is a reason gsw does not want him

i wouldnt waste our cap room on him we can get a much better player like joe johnson
no point in ruining the teams future for a quick fix when there is no chance of us making playoffs anyway

He was a big part of the Clippers team that made it to the WC Semis in 2006 and went 7 games with the Suns.

That year they had a healthy Elton Brand and a healthy Sam Cassell.

If Maggette is not the primary scorer he can be quite effective. With Al Jefferson it could really work. With the Warriors and all of their wing scorers and lack of a PG or a big man that is a big threat in the post, it hasn't worked.

I do understand the apprehension though. But getting a 20ppg guy for peanuts should provide some interest, I'd hope.
