Shelden Williams/Bobby Brown for Rashad McCants/Calvin Booth

And we're off...

Two league sources say the Kings are closing in a deal that would send forward Shelden Williams and point guard Bobby Brown to Minnesota for guard Rashad McCants and Calvin Booth.

McCants is a fourth-year guard who will earn $2.6 million this season and be a restricted free agent this summer, while the veteran big man Booth will earn $1.1 million this season before coming off the books. While Williams is a free agent this summer, this would take the Kings off the hook for Brown's $736,420 for next season that is a player option.

UPDATES TO COME...

Hmm... I wouldn't mind Shelden for the rest of the year, but I do not want to give a roster spot to Brown next year.

According to the blog, the trade is complete. I don't get it.
No other reports that I can find.

Expirings for expirings.

If Shelden Williams can play no other position than PF, it seems like he wouldn't be much of a fit.

I think this is just a way to move McCants attitude (if it's an issue) off the team.

EDIT - oops, a small contract next year with Bobby Brown's player option.

I like Williams as a low cost option to see what he can do for us. However, I have no interest in Bobby Brown. Would assume we would buy him out even if he exercised the option.

Well, we also waste a roster spot on Brown and spend 800k on him next year.

I actually really like this deal. Williams is a very good defender and has ridiculously long arms that will alter shots and is strong enough not to give up position easy. I would have liked to add a 7 footer, but since he is costs almost a 1/3 of Dalembert or Chandler, it is good low-risk trade.

Maybe were bringing in Shelden b/c the Hinrich trade is requiring us to trade some of our bigs--- i.e. Collins/Cardinal, maybe even Madsen or Smith.

hooray hooray hooray?!?!

I really hope this is true, no risk/medium reward trade here for the Wolves. I know Brown hasn't been sterling, but his potential skillset is perfect; could easily be a Keyon Dooling type.

Bobby Brown has lots of potential (meaning very modest starter or solid backup in a good team). He was misused in Sacramento, but you can be getting a steal here. Very worth the risk.

You just said that to scare me .. and you succeeded.

Why do this trade if you can't offer Shelden Williams an opportunity? His team option wasn't picked up, so even if he succeeds, we don't have the rights to match. Curious.

On the bright side, we'll get to hear "My Prerogative" at the games.

Actually Shelden's standing reach is only 8'8" compared to Rodney Carney's 8'7.5". Chris Richard is about the same height but has a reach of over 9ft.

Regardless, this is not very exciting, but I think its worth it. Bobby Brown is supposedly supposed to be an outstanding defender. I found this quote from Salmons:

John Salmons has championed teammate Bobby Brown's raw talent since training camp and said he has the potential to be among the NBA's best defensive point guards.

"I think the biggest thing for him is he has to learn to cause havoc all game," Salmons said. "He's got to get up in his man like a Chris Paul (of New Orleans). He's causing havoc all game, all over the court. … Once (Brown) gets that mentality, I think he'll be a special player. He's got all the ability in the world."

Pre-Rondo? Distressing he couldn't beat out Beno Udrih for the job though...

Good point. I guess the thought is if he really likes it here and with the proposed lack of $ in FA he might come back cheap and we'd have a better idea after the audition of what he's worth and whether or not he'd be worth even bringing back.

Brown looks to be a cheap 3rd PG in lieu of an Ollie type if we didn't just buy him out.

Then again, you don't hand a guy $35 million and then immediately put him on your bench.

I like "The Landlord".

I was a big fan of him while he was in college - thus I was high on him in the draft. But he hasn't done much since entering the NBA. Though, when given minutes on the court he produces fairly well. I'd do this trade just for the fact that the Wolves need size and I want to see if he can play if given a chance.

Wow, I guess this trade already happened. Just saw on ESPN (and wiretap).

This is pretty funny because I have been playing NBA Live and I made a trade for Shelden Williams and Kirk Hinrich on my franchise about 3 months ago. I have an 8-man roster (the other player riding the bench is Marcus Williams of Golden State).

Don't think the Kirk Hinrich trade will go through though.

Has anyone heard anything negative about Sheldon williams attitutde? Sometimes when a Top 5 pick (or any lottery pick), doesn't succeed, or has to ride the bench, he may get a little bitter. Williams option wasn't picked up, he was just traded from ATL, and he is being traded again from SAC.

I may just be cautious. Sounds like he and Brown will play defense, and I always give those guys better character marks.
