Nassau County Councilman speaks on referendum for new arena

The New York Islanders were being wooed by potential buyers as recently as last week, and “are ready to leave (Long Island) tomorrow” if a new hockey stadium isn’t built, Chief Deputy County Executive Rob Walker said yesterday.

Walker was speaking to County Legislators, asking them to approve an Aug. 1 public vote so that residents could decide whether the County should borrow up to $400 million to create a sports and entertainment destination center in Nassau’s Hub.

County Executive Edward P. Mangano proposed the referendum last week as he announced a major economic development and job creation plan for the Nassau Coliseum Site.
