Build-A-Team 5.0 anyone?

Post#1 » by LJ4pointplay » Fri Feb 25, 2011 1:46 am

I know there is a PS3 build-a-team league going on, and I know we have done four of these build-a-teams unsuccessfully, but they are always a good time and we move it further along every time. I'm sure there is interest in doing this, but what we really need is to set rules from the get-go, volunteers to lead it, and volunteers to judge it. I know I don't have time to take a lead role, but hopefully others do, because I'd love to give this thing another shot. After all, with the trade deadline passing, we need some reason to keep our imaginary GM hats on!

..and if we do decide to do it, shotgun Jazz! (I've been the Jazz in 3/4 of these things).

EDIT: IF YOU SIGN UP, PLEASE INDICATE IF YOU HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE PAST. PREFERENCE GOES TO VETS.
EDIT: I put in sign-ups below, but they are worthless without agreed upon rules and judges.

I'll put teams in the original post, but if this is going to happen we need people to step with rules, etc.

I'd join, but the wifey would kill me. Too time consuming for a competition that never declares a winner. I wouldn't mind being an Assistant Pimp this time around though.

I think the tradition is that those in the past BATs get 1st dibs in spots in the BAT. This is important as way too many guys that havent done this dont realize how much time and effort it takes.

I'll take the Orlando Magic this time around. This is also an awesome time to start a Build A Team, right after the Trade Deadline!

Also, I think we need to make the judging system as simple as possible. The closest we ever came to declaring a winner was during BAT 3.0 where we actually used an NBA2K sim. Everything else about how we run this I think is fine, but we make the judging way to thorough for anyone to be able to get through it.

Judging is the one thing that always holds us back from finishing. Either way, I think most of us know that what's fun about this isn't whether or not you're going to win this. It's the drafting, trades, and everyone commenting on each others' teams.

Agreed. It would be great if someone was able to pull up the old rules and we could decide how to improve upon them.

I think the best way to do is to only have two categories for points. 1) Probability of championship/contending within near future (this encompasses things like team chemistry, etc.) and 2) Future outlook (this would roll youth and salary cap situation into one. While the exact ratio isn't important, I believe category 1 should probably be worth 3X category 2. 75%2 25% split. Having judges rank teams is 1-30 for each category is probably best. Most points wins. So MAX points is 120.

If people think we should take a sim into account, then just take a 25% share out of category 1 and give it to the sim. Again, with the ranking correlating to points.

So: Category 1: 50% Category; Category 2 25%; SIM 25%.

..just trying to get the brainstorm going.. if better ideas are out there I am all for them.
