Went to the Dleague open tryouts today in Basketball City. My friend was trying out for fun so I went to see the process. They had refs that were basically trying out to be Dleague refs as a "head" ref was watching and coaching them.

Starks was there, my friend got a picture with him before I got there but I didn't feel like approaching Starks for a pic. To be honest I wasn't old enough to watch basketball when he was playing and after seeing that he shot us out of a finals win in 94 and has a career fg% of 41%, I wasn't really interested in meeting him.

Lots of people trying out, 19 teams with about 10 people on each team. The cool part was scouts and Dleague coaches being present so I sat next to a scout in one of the games because I was curious how the "scouting" process works. And I was disappointed as I saw things like "plays well on both ends" being written. Maybe it was a bad/in-training or lazy scout that I happened to sit next too. But I was expecting some cool stuff.

Then the best part came as one of the Dleague coaches selected a few prospects to pull aside and work them out on a separate court. I was watching the kind of skills the coach expects from the players and one of them did really well and got a promise from the coach for more workouts which the player will now get paid to attend. I found myself rooting for those guys pulled aside to make their shots/post-moves even though they were strangers to me. Seeing someone who probably played ball most of their life and finally get that opportunity and coming through (the guy that got promised more tryouts) is a joy to watch. It's a big pressure situation when you get 6 shots from 3pt land and they can basically dictate whether you make the Dleague and potentially the NBA.
