Knicks interested in Maurice Evans

Post#1 » by ctorres » Tue Dec 13, 2011 7:40 pm

Alex Kennedy wrote:New York has several options as they decide how to spend the $2.5 million exception. They have reached out to Jamal Crawford, Maurice Evans and Shawne Williams in recent days.

Alex Kennedy wrote:Evans, who displayed his leadership throughout the NBA’s labor negotiations, is another player the Knicks are considering. The Washington Wizards acquired Evans prior to last year’s trade deadline and have also expressed interest in re-signing him. However, New York has emerged as a potential suitor since they want to add a veteran shooting guard. Evans was very productive after landing in Washington, averaging a career-high 9.7 points and mentoring the team’s younger players.

Maurice Evans is one of my favorite role players. He is a good 3 point shooter, good defender, and quite athletic for a player in his 30's. On our team, I think you can easily pencil him in as a starting SG. I totally lost track of him being available. If there is any free agent swingman who actually fits on our roster, then Maurice Evans is our guy.

It sucks. Personally I'd prefer Shawne, but we're taking way too long on making things happen. Shawne is the perfect tweener type SF/PF to back-up Stat & Melo.

If we sign Mo and let Shawne walk, i'd be piss.

I dont see him contributing anything that Shump/Landry couldnt, besides being a veteran...

I wouldn't be mad at signing Evans, but I want Purp locked up ASAP.

It's up to Shawne. We offered him a contract to come back. He has other offers for more money. We can't give more than $2.5 for 2 years.

If Shawne decides to go elsewhere for more money, I don't blame him, but there is nothing Knicks can do about it.

Mo Evans would be a solid signing. I hope we only offer him the veteran min though.

Evans would be a great addition. I picked him in BAT so that should tell you everything you need to know .

This would be another Woodson-Atlanta connection. He seems to be our Assistant GM now.

The Knicks should have gone after Josh McRoberts instead of signing Hunter.

Mo was on my fantasy team a few years ago!

Good defender and a good three point shooter. Meh...if Shawne isn't coming back, might as well. I just don't want him to be eating up many minutes for Shump/Fields.

Hollinger rating Evans....

+ Solidly built wing battling declining athleticism. Rebound rate dwindling.

+ Can't create off dribble. Average shooter with low release, but likes corner 3s.

+ Solid fundamental defensive player but lacks length. Will not turn ball over.

Apologies for the brutality, but Evans looks like he's about spent. His trademark skills in the league have been that he's a good athlete, he can shoot respectably, and he won't beat himself. The last is still true -- Evans had the fifth-lowest turnover ratio among small forwards.

But athletically, he's got nothing left. Evans finished 64th among small forwards in rebound rate, 59th in usage rate, 51st in blocks, 53rd in steals and 61st in free throw rate. He'll still take corner 3s but he's merely adequate in this area; others do it better. And even when he got to the rim, he converted only 59.5 percent -- subpar for a player who used to throw down authoritative jams.

Evans still has chances left because he's a solid locker-room guy and he won't make many mistakes; that may keep him in the league another season. But he'll need to shoot very well to stick around much longer.

McRoberts is going to get a good amount of money -- something we can't offer.

I still say, knowing that if he plays here another year, the Knicks will hold his early bird rights, Williams really, really wants to stay here and the KNicks know it.

I'm still anticipating a vet's minimum signing by Williams or he'll gave the Knicks every last chance to give him the $2.5m eventually.
