Not getting Paul Was the biggest blessing in disguise?

Post#1 » by GONYK » Thu Feb 9, 2012 2:27 am

Aside from Jeremy Lin looking like the real deal, not getting Paul could have dramatically altered the course of this franchise building process.

Not getting Paul caused us to make the move to amnesty Billups and go after Tyson. So we addressed our big man/interior D issue.

Now, Lin's emergence has allowed us to almost circumvent our cap situation. I believe we hold his early bird rights, which means the most he can get offered is the MLE, and we can match it.

To get a 23 yr old pure PG of this caliber for the MLE is a major coup. Not to mention how the addition of Lin resets our depth and balance, since everyone can go back to their real positions.

I mean, we got lucky, and caught lightening in a bottle, but we also just covered the two most important positions in basketball for $15M

From a pure financial standpoint, this has to be a blessing

we'll see. gotta see how it runs with melo and stat. i think stat is going to fit in perfectly, but i want to see how melo adjusts.

You're like the 3rd or 4th guy thats said that.

I agree too.

Im always against chris paul coz I believe in dantoni that hes the best at using pgs. Getting chandler was the right move coz hes the third hardest to get. amare is the hardest coz first option type bigs are the rarest then followed by melo. Nash is still finding his amare whereas amare already had felton, now lin and davis for cheap.I wouldve gotten chris paul after amare if it wasnt for dantoni coz having 1 first option is already enough. What happens the last few games proves that its easier to get a pg than a defensive anchor like chandler and we would be like miami still finding a center until now whereas we got 2 pgs already in just a quarter of a season after sacrificing billups. I think the biggest reason why we struggled early is because of amare not producing, but the last few games proves that hes coming back to pre-melo form.

if melo plays like durant in this system, we would be the best team in the league. Imagine suns with defense, thats the best in the league.

Nah, we don't own his early bird rights as kos explained the other day, since he was waived. But since he's a 2-year rook, he can only be offered the league average salary (or MLE) by another team, and we have the option to match, so long as we have our own MLE. So the only way we lose him is if say Steve Nash wants more than the vet min or bi-annual, in which case...I'd rather just keep the 23 year old PG over the 39 yr-old one with 1 or 2 years left, if even.

The Tyson Chandler addition was everything this Knicks team has missed since the early to mid 90's... Which was a true 7'0+ Center in Patrick Ewing during his prime/golden years. We just landed a Championship winning NBA starting Center in Tyson Chandler who's only 29 years of age. A top 3 defensive center and most definitely an overall top 5 Center in today's NBA. We all know about Howard and Bynum, but I can't think of 5 NBA Center's who I'd take over Tyson Chandler himself. Also ranks 14th in rebounds this year and ranked 10th in boards off the glass last season. He's improved our defense over night, has became a great team leader, and has also improved our rebounding ability as a team.

And now we have a true PG in Jeremy Lin who's only 23 years of age? A pure PG who's a facilitator of the offense, facilitates ball movement, can execute the pick and roll to perfection, looks to pass first (which is extremely important when having guys such as Melo on the wings with both Amare and Chandler looking to FEAST down low), can break down his defender - get into the lane - while either finishing athletically at the rim or kicking out to an open shooter (Novak), can drive into the lane etc, etc and can also DEFEND on the defensive end of the court? Simply amazing what we've found/landed in Jeremy Lin. We seriously just found a diamond in the rough. What he's done over the past 3 games is no fluke, it's the work of a truly special PG. He's averaged 25.3 points and 8.3 assists per game since becoming a starter three games ago. We've gone 3-0 and he's only averaged 3.6 turnovers per game.

Like I've stated in another thread... I take Lin + Chandler over Chris Paul himself.

no no no no.

Shump getting injured because of Chris Wilcox on XMas was a blessing in disguise. Knicks only went after Lin as insurance due to the shump injury.

Not getting Paul meant keeping Landry Fields, Iman Shumpert, Toney Douglass (Yes, I know you guys hate him), and whatever picks the Knicks were able to offer.

D'Antoni is the best at using his PGs, so you're against Paul?

If getting once in a decade lucky with a minimum signing that has been cut 3 times is easy, then sure

just wondering, over a full season and starting, what type of stats do you see Lin putting up? I don't expect him to be a 20/10 guy every night but I think 14/8 on 48% shooting is realistic for him

When Stat and Melo come back and as long as they both score 20 points plus per night, I would sign up with Lin getting 14 points 12 assists.

Yea, but we still weren't winning with Chandler. We absolutely needed a PG.

Now we have a top 5 C and a very good PG for $15M combined.

Plus we got to keep our young guys.

It goes to Lin

Kind of a noobie with salary/contract talk, but what's the longest contract we can offer him with the MLE?
