This season, one of the biggest problems with our roster was health. This led to constant lineup changes, role changes, and inconsistent play from alot of our players. We developed into a great defensive team as the season went on and offensively, we were sometimes stagnant and relied to heavily on Melo or (unfortunately) JR Smith to get us some points. We were deep when healthy but never healthy when it mattered.

Tyson Chandler/Jerome Jordan
Amare Stoudemire/Josh Harrelson
Carmelo Anthony
Iman Shumpert/Toney Douglas
Jeremy Lin

We have rights to Landry Fields
JR Smith has a 2.5 million dollar player option, who would pay him more with the new CBA?

That is 8 guys locked in and 2 more guys that might come back (at least 1 of them will be i'd guess).

Other guys that played for our team to end the season:
Steve Novak
Jared Jeffries
Mike Bibby
Baron Davis
Dan Gadzuric

We have a 2.5 million dollar exception and then the vet minimum to bring in 5-7 players.

With all that out there, what do you see as needs for this team in order to improve upon a first round playoff exit the past 2 years? Who would you add?

Im gonna work around the number 7 players that need to be added.
1. I would resign Laundry Fields. Hes a young player still with a solid work ethic and aside from the terrible shooting year he had, hes not really bad at anything and he doesnt play outside himself.
2. I would bring back Jared Jeffries. When healthy his defense and intangibles were great, he played very well next to Lin and Chandler. Since hes an injury prone player, I wouldnt sign him for anything more then the vet min.
3/4. Bring in a backup point guard that is a real point guard. Mike Bibby is fine as a 3rd or 4th string point guard, but he should be out there to spread the floor not bring the ball up the court and run the offense. I want Melo and Shump to be secondary ball handlers, not guys that bring the ball up the court consistently. I would look at Kirk Hinrich and Andre Miller with our 2.5 exception, they are both vets that can run an offense and are big enough to be on the floor with Lin at times. I would look at Ronnie Price, Jonny Flynn, Ish Smith, Keyon Dooling, and John Lucas III with the minimum. We need 2 of those guys.
5. We need more outside shooting. I would LOVE to retain Novak but I dont think he is worth 2.5 million because he doesnt bring much to the table aside from shooting the rock and the 2.5 is really our biggest chance to make offseason improvement externally. We present a great destination for some shooters even at the minimum. The past 2 years we have had two guys that were on the outs of the NBA become guys that will likely get long term deals (Purp and now Novak). Shooters that could fill in this role for cheap are: Vladamir Radmonovic, Anthony Parker, Nate Robinson, Dahntay Jones, Deshawn Stevenson, Carlos Delfino, Josh Howard, Brian Cook, CJ Miles.
6/7. Big man depth. We need more depth at the 4/5 to use as insurance if Tyson or Amare go down. Guys that I see are Ersan Ilyasova, Marcus Camby, Reggie Evans, Ian Mahinmi, Hamed Hadaddi, Hasheem Thabeet, Nazr Muhammed, Anthony Toliver, Edjuardo Najera, Ryan Hollins, We need 1 of those guys.

Guys I would give the 2.5 million to, in order:
1. Andre Miller
2. Ersan Ilyasova (hes the best player but he will likely get more, or head back to Europe and a 3/4 is not really a big need)
3. Kirk Hinrich
4. Steve Novak
5. Marcus Camby
6. Reggie Evans

Targeting these players would cover our main needs without making any big trades (we lakc resources) and keeping within the salary cap. If we win the CBA case giving us Lins bird rights then the game changes a bit but I dont want to work with that until we have it.

Jeremy Lin/Andre Miller/Jonny Flynn/Shumpert
Landry Fields/Iman Shumpert/Jeremy Lin/Toney Douglas
Carmelo Anthony/Vladamir Radmonovic/Landry Fields
Amare Stoudemire/Jared Jeffries/Vladamir Radmonovic/Josh Harrellson
Tyson Chandler/Reggie Evans/Amare Stoudemire/Jerome Jordan

I think that is the best way we can build our team unless some vet like Ray Allen/Lamar Odom is trying to join for below market value. What are our team needs leading into this offseason.

I like the last post. Assuming the team stays intact minus maybe smith we have 3 main holes. 1. Back up big. 2. Shooting guard. 3. Point guard.

Problem is likely not having more than then 2.5 and vet min to get it.

I'm concerned novack might try to cash in and not be a knick, but also think we can replace is shooting. There are lots of decent points on the market so the 2.5 should be good for that. Smith staying or going will determine if we still need a sg.

Problem with this game is that we don't have many options since I don't think stat gets moved and there is no one else to trade

I think smith crosses the east river to the nets.

If union wins:
Keep Lin novack and fields.
Use mle on Odom
Lle on Kidd

Sign a shooting guard, try Allen, then look around.
Draft Machado.
Move Douglas for anything.

If lose:
Take out Odom and novack above.

Not doable. If union wins and we keep all three, we are surely over the 68 million threshold meaning there won't be a MLE and LLE. There will be a taxpayer's MLE only. That probably would be enough for Odom given what he did last year, but I'd rather spend that money on another PG.

If it is possible I would love to trade Laundry and pick up some picks like Cleveland's 2nd rounders or a servicible guard.

Jared Zwerling ‏@JaredZwerling

Just spoke w/ Jared Jeffries. He wants to return to NY (likely at vet's min). He's about to embark on a fishing trip in the South Pacific.

That's huge news...I'm not joking, either.

Ain't that the truth...the new CBA punishes teams trying to do the super team maneuver. Knicks need to worry about their ability to field a full team.

Best realistic hope, second round of the playoffs.

Over the last year or so I've grown to really appreciate Jeffries. He stole a whole lot of money in his initial stint here (not his fault) but he wants to be a Knick and is willing to sacrifice money to do so. Plus he always plays hard and really helps us defensively. I respect that. I hope he is back.
Has anyone ever seen Paul Pierce and Plenette Pierson together? I rest my case.

@Scalabrine

Ilyasova is being talked about as a top FA big man this summer. He's gonna get a lot more than the MLE, I'll tell you that.
