Hey everyone, I'm looking to find a good book but I don't know where to start. I've asked some friends but wasn't too pleased with their suggestions. Im not a huge fan of biographies and non-fiction, so keep that in mind. Some books I've enjoyed: catcher in the Rye, 1984, Choke, Hunger Games series (slightly embarrassing), A song of fire and ice series. Thanks.

I love Catcher in the rye myself! Since you like Catcher in the rye, I recommend you to read - One flew over cuckoo's nest. Great book.

Any of Jodi Picoult is pretty good if you wanna find out where you stand with your beliefs (not religious beliefs). My recommendation..start with My Sister's Keeper. A book along the lines of My Sister's Keeper is Handmaid's Tale.

I haven't read anything good in a while so I'll be lurking on this thread to find out what some of the other posters recommend.

If you liked Catcher in the Rye then I would suggest John Fante's Ask the dust. I can guarantee you will love it.

I read 2 Gillian Flynn books recently, "Dark Places" and "Sharp Objects". Those are really good, well written. If you like thrillers, I recommend them.

"Therapy" by Sebastian Fitzek, a german author, is also a good choice.

I tend to only enjoy fiction books as well, but the best book I have read in a long time is Lone Survivor by Marcus Latrell. If you appreciate Navy SEALs then this book will blow your mind.

One Flew Over the Coo Coo's Nest would be a great for you if you liked 1984. Catch 22 is one of my personal favorites, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, too.

If you liked Choke, you might like Survivor, also by Palahniuk. Invisible Monsters is great as well.

I would also recommend novels by Bret Easton Ellis, such as American Psycho, Glamorama, Rules Of Attraction, etc.

If you're into inventive short stories try reading George Saunders' In Persuasion Nation.

Other than that, it depends on what topics you're into, or could be into. You obviously have your classics that everyone here will probably cite eventually. Heck, I found rereading The Illiad and The Odyssey to be one of the better decisions of my summer so far.

Ender's Game for science fiction. Even if you're not into science fiction, I think you'll enjoy this book a lot, anyway.

Dante's Trilogy...Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. Greatest work of literature of all time.

+1 Though it's debatable with Homer's works, maybe.

Lolita is also a good novel off the top of my head by Nabokov. The Road by Cormac McCarthy is good if you're into the post-apocalyptic setting.

I also know a lot of contemporary poetry if anyone is interested, though probably not.
