That Gerald Wallace trade was a terrible terrible trade...

In terms of building your fanbase, the D-Will trade wasnt that bad

But that 6th pick is more attractive than Gerald Wallace, not to mention the fact that he can leave now

In most situations this would have been a dumb move on his part but in this case it was a good business decision. In order for King not to look like a total idiot he will resign him to an extended contract for 10 million. He and that organization are now in face saving mode. It amazes me that there are GM's that have not learned from our past mistakes.

To be fair, Dallas offered Tyson Chandler a one-year $20 million deal, which he rejected. He made the smart move by taking more guaranteed money in what is likely to be his last large contract of his career.

In an all likelihood, this is the approach that Gerald Wallace is taking. Considering he's missed many games due to injury during his career, this may prove to be a smart move for him.

EDIT: BAD MATH.

Billy King should've never been hired...

If Deron leaves, and it's looking more and more that he does, the Nets roster will look like:

Anthony Morrow
Jordan Farmar
Johan Petro
Brook Lopez
Damion James
Marshon Brooks
Jordan Williams

...and they gave away the No.6 overall pick and have nothing to show for it.

i guess i'm not considering that the nets will overpay him. they've shown enough stupidity that you're probably right. on the open market he's an mle player and he can get that next year too.

Regardless if he resigns or not, that trade was just bad. Set you back a few years bad. If the Nets wanted Wallace they could have signed him in the offseason. They gave up a lottery pick to rent him and didn't make the playoffs.

Wallace will certainly command more than the MLE in the open market. Just not what NJ is about to give him which will assuredly be horrific.

I don't know why Wallace would opt out. There is no team willing to pay him $9.5 million this season, and his value wouldn't have drop by much in one season. He would still only be 30.

He probably did it because Billy King told him that they were going to re-sign him to a multi-year deal. I like Wallace, but he's no longer a difference maker on a team. At best he's a 3rd or 4th option offensively.

Billy King and Otis Smith never should have been GM.

They have no chance at getting past Boston or Indiana, and definitely not the Bulls or the Heat.
As far as the opt out goes? I think this wasn't a shocker. Believe the expectations for quite some time now was the Wallace was going to opt out (Billy King even mentioned it a while back that the expectations was that Wallace would opt out but that they'd look to resign him). Wallace is 29. This may be his best shot at getting that one final big payday.
If Billy King knew he would probably opt out, then trading a lottery pick for him looks even worse because that means he could have just kept the pick and signed up as a FA anyway.
