OT Did David Stern apologize for the beat your wife comment?

Postby NYK_Lampe on Sat Jun 16, 2012 7:33 am

I heard this earlier in the week and couldn't believe a sports commissioner would make such a horrifying comment. When I looked into it and realized Rome had no history of it and Stern was just trying to say something disgusting to try and smear Rome because he asked if the Lottery was fixed. With a reaction to a silly question where he could have shot it down peacefully it makes him look guilty.

There are many many battered women out there that some sort of joke/cheap shot coming from a sports commish this is 100% out of line and not to be tolerated. Ive lost every bit of respect for this disgusting little man after hearing this. Has he or the NBA come out with some sort of apology for this?

"Do you still beat your wife?" is a figure of speech. It's a question that has no right answer, because either way, you are a wife beater.

Stern was implying that Rome asked him a question like that. He wasn't insinuating that Rome beats his wife.

Why should he apologize? It wasn't a legit question, just like Rome's wasn't.

If an NBA player had said the same thing to a reporter at a press conference, I'm pretty sure Stern would have fined him regardless of connotation. But he's not gonna anyway.

So various racist "figures of speech" are cool because they are considered figures of speech even if certain people are harmed by them?

Nothing. What GONYK was implying is because its considered a figure of speech its appropriate to use even though its offensive. So with that logic the same could be said about certain racist comments am I rite?

thats dumb. if you have a problem with what stern said, and people defending it, then say so and debate that, not compare it to racism and try to flame the thread.

Many fans were thinking it was rigged after NO won. So it was a legit question to be asked in an interview. It also could have been seen as a favor to Stern, so he could have addressed those fans concerns. Instead Stern showed his true colors once again and confirmed to people the lotto was rigged. Great job Stern.

This comment is dumb. He is debating it, someone claimed it was okay because it was a figure of speech. So using that logic, other negative comments including racial ones that are figure of speeches, should also be okay. The debate point being, just because someone thinks it is a figure of speech, does not mean it is appropriate to say.

Thank you. It's horribly offensive to women who have been subjected to domestic violence. Coming from the face of a league he should know better than to say something like that. Was Rome's question ridiculous? Sure considering if it was rigged Stern would deny it and/or say something defensive back like he did. But did what Rome say offend like Stern's comment did?

He has nothing to apologize for, but he did use the phrase incorrectly.

I can't believe people are still hating on Stern about this. It's not an "offensive" figure of speech. It's apparently a classic retort to a loaded question. The effectiveness of the retort has to do with the fact that the retort itself is loaded. How, in any fashion, does it make light of domestic violence? I would argue that the awareness of the seriousness of domestic violence is what strengthen's retort's effectiveness.
