What is our Best Line-up?

Postby ORANGEandBLUE on Fri Sep 14, 2012 11:21 am

Melo and Chandler are shoe-ins.

Amare is almost a shoe-in, although if he plays like he did last year, you could talk me into sliding Melo to the 4. Even then, I'm not sure I want Melo playing the 4 that much.

I think Felton's gotta be included, cause he's the only guy I trust to break down the defense and run the p/r.

So who's the 5th guy?

- Novak is an interesting choice cause none of those 4 are great outside shooters. You could put him at the 3 and slide Melo to the 2. But I'll pass cause I think that would be awful defensively.

- Shump when healthy is one of our top 5 players, but I don't think he'll be at full strength this year. And until he improves his shot, having him out there with that 4 would kill our spacing.

- Brewer? Na, same as Shump.

I think it comes down to Kidd or JR at the 2. Both provide solid defense and floor-spacing. I'm leaning towards Kidd because I trust him more to make shots, and to help Felton with the pg duties so that Felton can focus more on attacking the paint. Kidd also can ensure that Melo and Amare get the ball in the right spots. But if JR can make his open shots and reign in the chucking, then he'd be the best guy to put there.

So I'm gonna go with:

Felton
Kidd
Melo
Amare
Tyson

Thoughts?

Tyson

Rebounding, scoring, spacing, without sacrificing our defense too much.

It depends on who we face but I see several lineups we can throw at some teams.

Probable starters:

Felton
Brewer (he should be back by the opener)
Melo
Amar'e
Chandler

A nice "second wind" lineup:

Kidd
Smith
Novak
Amar'e
Camby

All-defense lineup:

Felton
Shumpert
Brewer
Camby
Chandler

Balanced lineup:

Kidd
Shumpert
Melo
Amar'e
Chandler

Tyson
Amare
Melo
Brewer (hopefully Shump sooner than later)
Felton

That lineup, while lacking shooting, is defensively tenacious, can get out on the break, and doesn't put too much wear and tear on anyone.

I can also see a case for Kidd starting, for spacing and ball movement with the starters, but playing limited mins overall.

We have a lot of options. At times we can go with a huge lineup of:

Kidd 6'4
Melo 6'8
Novak 6'10
Camby 6'11
Chandler 7'1

Cambyman
STAT
Melo
Brewer
Felton

Am I the only one who thinks Camby should start? He can hit a jump shot---and do everything else Tyson can do.
It's a better fit for Amare.

Tyson
Melo at PF
Kidd
and whoever else would be the other main rotation.

obviously its all about need

are we trying to shut the opponent down and protect a lead?

if so

Felton, Shump, Melo, Camby and Chandler are a pretty solid defensive 5
Felton, Shump, Brewer, Melo and Chandler work too depending on the matchups

remember any defensive unit still has to be able to score on the other end unless its a single possession lockdown. You need to keep the opposing defense working and run the clock down at the very least.

If we are staging a comeback from down then whoever is hot will have to be on the floor but for arguments sake Id say

Kidd, Smith, Novak, Melo and Amare are our most formidable offensive players.

IMO,

PG Kidd
SG Shump
SF Brewer
PF Melo
C Tyson

This is similar to the team we had at the end of last season. I think that's our best lineup.
