Damn this thread made me worried we will lose JR next season. If we only have early bird rights and can offer him 5 million a year max then he is gone for sure. Someone is going to offer him more money than that.

Pistons? They are going nowhere and they have been burnt with every FA signing during the past 5 years. They already have Stuckey at the 2. ZERO chance they throw money @ JR.

Kings? The only way they do something is if they waive Tyreke. I doubt they want to pair Cousins with JR.

Hawks? They just signed Lou Williams. ZERO chance they throw money on JR.

JR has a bad rep in the league. He's 27, so he's only good for a win-now team. Nobody is giving him more than $5M.

As for Landry - there was only one GM who offered him anything and you're forgetting Landry is known to be a great character glue guy who was only 24.

Nobody wanted JR this summer, so I can't see how or why that changes.

If I'm not mistaken Stuckey is about to be an FA and he's been miserable this season. They will look to upgrade if he can't turn it around.

Kings let Evans run the point plenty with Salmons as the 2 guy...JR is an upgrade over Salmons without a doubt.

Hawks are gonna let a lot of contracts expire and rebuild around their core...Included in the expirings is Kyle Korver, they're main shooting threat. They'll be happy to replace him with JR who's 27 and adds more dimensions than simply shooting.

JR's rep is going to vanish if he keeps up his level of play. Landry Fields just got a huge pay day. Jamal Crawford is becoming one of the big impact signings of the off season and he's done it in a JR Smith role. I'm hopeful that we keep JR and 5 million seems reasonable, but after this past off season craziness...I'm not taking for granted that there are some teams with needs that JR would fit.

That's what I'm banking on. I've been a huge fan of JR Smith since he did the behind the back dunk at the dunk contest ...He's been amazing this season and I have no qualms signing him well past the 3 year bench mark that has been set by most of our contracts. 5 million for what he's given us thus far seems like a perfect deal.

Because in sports, NBA in particular, payrolls are skewed like that. Thing is, players get payed before performance which I think is a faulty system in its own right. First and foremost, J.R. was not this kind of player when we first signed him. If he was, we were not going to be able to afford him. Simple. Other teams would offer him much more money.

I think you're seriously overplaying this "character issue" stuff. What exactly has J.R done that would significantly impact his future earning potential? If continues with his mature attitude and high level of play, he'll certainly be a hot commodity on the market during the offseason. He'll be in that 10+ mill a year range.
