I'm 22 and obviously have a love for sports. I love to write and have developed a reputation for it to the point where I'v essentiall developed a business writing papers. I'm favoring sports broadcasting, but want to right more in relation to the analytics, and am concerned with moving around constantly. Any ideas Knick fans?

I was in the same boat as you by trying to go the marketing route. It wasn't fulfilling and made me realize I had to go back to school for my Masters. Have you tried blogging?

Take an internship with a team, and move up the ladder.

You never know, your degree may help you progress sooner.

I was looking for jobs last week and I saw an ad as a blogger for the Brooklyn Nets. You should look into that. LOL

But seriously, I got my communications degree and now work for a music marketing firm. It's pretty awesome. You can do a lot with it if you are persistent and well-rounded in other areas.

Either you go the marketing route, but if you try to go sports route. It will take a while and a lot of sacrifices until you get there. Start a twitter or blogging.

Sports route is such a grinding risky career path IMO. Unless youre a hot chick, you're going to have a bazillions barriers and competitors for the same few lousy pay opportunities.

Get a real job and blog on the side for fun, and if it creates a following chase it further.

Look for work that involves planning, coordination, project management, jobs where communication skills are essential. A degree in communication is very generic, but may still get you in the door for interviews in a wide range of markets. Then its up to you not to sound stupid.

First off, congrats on the degree.

You need to understand the field you are getting into. This is one of the most competitive fields out there. Who doesn't want to get paid to go to sporting events and spend their free time following sports. My cousin is a prominent reporter for ESPN (won't disclose his name but if u watch sports center you know him). If your going to make the decision to go this route you need to have your living expenses covered for 2 years. Remember, building your name and contact base is more important than take home pay. Remember Jarrod Rudolph, he has no credibility anymore as he kept saying dwight to nets, dwight to nets when he was really doing a favor for dwight or whatever it was. As always, Wojo was the first to report the real trade.

Here's what I would do:
1) start blogging and having a presence on twitter. Look at a guy like Tommy Dee. Tweet at guys like him, Alan Hahn, ect. Start building your following. A following is what will make or break you. But also have articles that offer creative opinions with facts to back it up. Weather talking about trades or breaking down a game, get your facts straight. You lose all credibility if the facts are wrong.
2) go to as many networking events as possible and try to build relationships
3) look for an entry level job in the business. Work the switchboard at WFAN, hold camera's for MSG, ect. You need to be around people who know the right people. That's how you build your connection base. You may want to consider moving to a smaller market for a few years to get a job or even working at a big time college athletics program. My cousin at ESPN launched his career by covering a top-10 football team at his school.

Baisically in any business you need to build your contact base and make a name for yourself.

I was raised to do what you like and like what you do. A phrase that was supported by the guy I idolized while I was DJing in college, Adam DJ AM Goldstein. Find something you like to do and then find someone to pay you for it. You seem like you have found something you like to do, now go out, work hard, network your ass off, and make it happen.
