"Realistic" Predictions for the NY Knicks 2014-5 season

Post#1 » by Dr. Detfink » Sun Jul 20, 2014 4:25 pm

I love this movie. This scene reminds me so much of the Knicks board on Realgm:

That scene gets me pumped to post every day on this blessed board.

So now, the NY Knicks nation has...

1. An actual Point Guard without any gun crimes attached.

2. A rookie head coach

3. Returning Superstar that can buy Staten Island (but won't)

4. Some Youth

Now, the Knicks are a BETTER team but how much better? Good enough to make the playoffs?

The Cavs will tighten the playoff picture. The bad teams get better. Suddenly the #6-8 block gets harder to clinch.

I think they are a 45-50 win team, if healthy.

I think Amare and JR Smith will both have very good seasons. Especially Amare.
Bargnani will work well in the triangle also, but I'm not sure he can stay healthy.

Best case 43 wins 6th seed
Worst case: 33 wins out of playoffs

A system can make players better, but it can also expose players as things they are not.

Basically the triangle is harmonic and is unforgiving by one missed note.

The triangle, while seemingly complex because it's a read and react offense and thrives off the intelligence of the players who are running, it is totally dependent on each player on the floor noting what they should be doing at that precise moment at times without the ball while at the same time notating the defense and adjusting the offense accordingly. Thinking slows it down, it has to become natural and quick.

As far as the team goes, while I do expect the team to stumble a little out of the gate, I also dont expect to see the roster we have right now in it's entirety.

I'd expect a low seed...likely 6th, but actually being able to compete with the highrr seeed to getting better over the course of the season.

I'm guessing around 45 wins, and playing spoiler in the playoffs. Barg has an a incredible bounce back year and is in the running for comeback player. The triangle is perfect for a big man who can shoot and pass well. His last two seasons he's been injured on freak accidents (brought upon himself).

Well, I expect a slow start as ball dominant, shoot first players like Melo, Stat, JR and Bargs adjust to the triangle. Fish will have his growing pains as rookie head coach and will probably look like a bottom-10 coach for the first 30 or so games like Kidd did. It's going to take time.

By the end of the year, I'd expect us to have about the 7th best offense (11th last year) and around the 20th best defense (24th last year, didn't improve personnel but effort and scheme should improve).

I'll go with a final record of 42-40, 7th or 8th seed.

I think the Raptors overachieved last year and we win the division. 44-48 wins, third or fourth seed.

47-35, 10 game improvement over last season, growing pains early but they'll hit their groove once they master the triangle and make a big midseason trade. Play spoiler in the playoffs as the 6th seed, by knocking off the #3 seed and taking #2 to 6 games in the conference semis.

2013-14 New York 37 - 45
2012-13 New York 54 - 28
2011-12 * New York 36 - 30 (45-37 pace over 82 game season)
2010-11 New York 42 - 40

avg.: 45

+1 win for Jackson stability
+1 win for triangle
+1 win for Fisher credibility/motivation
+1 win for contract year guys

+/- 1 win for margin of error.

48-50 wins.

No one is talking me out of it.

From an outsider's perspective .. I'd say 41-45 wins. I know Tyson was butt last year, but Dalembert isn't better. If everyone's healthy & stays out of trouble, you have a lot of talent offensively, but Amare, Bargs, Sam D isn't gonna cut it defensively.

Think Tor wins the division again. Ross & Jonas will be better. Maybe DeRozan too. Got a little more depth & they have great continuity. It'll be close but I can see like Tor(47) Nyk(44) being the only 2 teams I see making the playoffs in the atlantic.

Cle, Chi, Ind, Was, Cha are locks for me. Tor too cause the div. So that's 6/8. Leaves two spots for Nyk, Bkn, Mia, Atl. Think Nyk & Mia take those two spots.

Unless Det can move Monroe, Smith bounces back & they get a 1-3 for Monroe I don't see Det being in there w/ Bos Phi Mil Orl missing out.

If healthy, I think we are at least a 42 win team. Our ceiling is 50. So using that logic, somewhere between 42-50 wins.

Anyone is better than Chandler. He didn't give any effort whatsoever. Cole and Dalembert are big upgrades just because they won't quit on the team
