I think in New York State it means intent to cause bodily harm without the use of a weapon. Pretty sure the meaning differs depending on where you are.

I'm probably alone here, but I think a slap was worse. It looks more disrespectful and probably embarrassed her. She probably would have been less offended if she got punched.
