But what kind of players can we sign for $8-$8.5M?

I think we are looking to split into two players....

Calderon
FA
Melo
FA
Towns/Okafor

Maybe both Green's if we get Towns. I imagine that if we get Okafor Phil will want to bring in a defensive minded center to cover Okafor. Where as with Towns we might go for a more offensive minded player like a Millsap or Green.

I still like Danny Green as our 2 guard for around 7-9 mil per. That would leave a solid 18 mil or so to sign another player.

why do you think okafor is a pf?

They are 25 per cent of the cap. So if the cap is 67 million their max is $16.75 mil.

I picture him as a Tim Duncan (on the offensive side of the ball) when he came out of college. Duncan played PF and played next to Robinson to start his career. Later in his career Duncan started playing more C. Even now Duncan plays PF a lot. I think to ease Okafor into the league and make the transition more comfortable for him he would need a defensive minded C playing next to him.

I would go with Green instead of Leonard to save more money the go after Harris for our sixth man.

In the first 5 minutes of Free Agency I offer Leonard and Butler the max to force the Spurs and Bulls hands. That is the first order of business. I don't want to move onto the other free agents until I know those two are gone.

Not always that simple. Basketball players are people too and you have to assume MOST of the desirabe free agents are going to get their offers the first hours/day. And that counts. No one wants to be someone's second choice.

You can't just make a list, hit the "ideal" guys first thinking you can come back to your second and third choices later.

Part of the strategy has to be prioritizes who you realistically think you can get, because those odds decrease if you make it publicly known they're 2nd or 3rd choices.

If the Knicks feel like they have o shot at Leonard and Butler, they can't tie themselves by putting in a 'what-the-hell' offer sheet.

The risk is they make us wait two weeks before matching. And then we're hamstrung. It's a tricky business dealing with RFAs and the Knicks need too many pieces to sit and wait. We've got to identify who really wants to come not just find the best deal for themselves.

I believe the max is now 3 days.

That's a plus. Curious now, though, if rfas will be ballsy enough to do what Monroe did and sign their qualifying offer to get to unrestricted free agency for 2016. Man, RFAs are really toxic this year.

Depends on the player. Leonard? I could see him considering it.

Butler and Middleton? Nah, their value may never be this high again. They don't have the track record like Leonard does. I think they cash in now.
